I'm wondering what the hell kind of sway they have on people to get them to not talk if their contracts have expired... I guess suing for
libel/slander/defamation/whatever counts here?

They just threaten them with lawsuits. Go back and read what Nicole said. CBS basically claims they own your entire life rights when it comes to Survivor.
Don't you think that someone like Richard or Gervase or someone would have written a book by now? That was easily more than five years ago. CBS/SEG
lawyers are grade-a "don't even mess with us" assholes. I have heard it over and over from countless Survivors over the years. If any book or
article or interview even HINTS at giving away show secrets, the lawyers will be all over you.

I guess that's why Deena never spilled the beans.

The contracts are always five years after the series ends? That's tricky and is easily read as five years after your season ends.
Either way, if I were Nicole, I'd so sell the diary for the big bucks. <3 |

Yeah but Deena wasn't exactly giving away filming secrets. "This is why Matt lost" is a lot different than "This is why Survivor had to re-shoot my boot episode three times." There is some stuff that SEG seems not to have a problem with. There's an interview I did with Chris (Vanuatu) about a year ago where he talked about some very dicey behind-the-scenes stuff with me. I was surprised he went that far. At the time, I just chalked it him to him never reading the internet and not really giving a shit. You can find it in the Sucks archives somewhere if you look around. Most Survivors would never have told me things like Vanuatu was the first season where they let the jurors mingle and freely talk about the vote, because that was the first season where the producers started to get lazy. From a production standpoint, that's the sort of thing that CBS/SEG doesn't really seem to be happy about. Although you know what? I suspect we will be getting a lot more Nicole Delma-type behind the scenes revelations coming our way in the next year or so. I think a lot of Survivors have been dying to test the waters on this subject, but they have nervous about it because they were too busy playing the "team player" card in regards to All-Stars 2. I think a lot of Survivors were trying to kiss-ass to SEG because that was the best/only way they were ever going to get cast on Micronesia. You play by their rules, and you're in. You show that you're disloyal, and you're dead. That seems to be the main way SEG picks favorites when it comes to All-Stars. It's not about who the fans want to see, it is who plays by the rules and who SEG wants to reward. Now that All-Stars 2 is over, I think there will be a lot less toeing the line when it comes to Survivor alumni and the CBS legal machine. I think we will see more tell-all exposes. But that's just my theory. We'll see. It doesn't help that so many Survivor alums have entertainment career aspirations. Hey, maybe that's why Survivor casts so many mactors these days. Maybe they are just easier than "regular people" to control afterwards... P.S. A Survivor alum once told me in an interview about how he had been threatened during the later stages of the application process. Mark Burnett came right out one day and said that if any of the information in this guy's bio was false or made up, then this guy would never work in Hollywood again. Burnett would see he was blacklisted personally. See, mactors are easy to control. That makes them excellent casting choices. :) |

By the way, none of this is new news. This has been well documented before. Go track down a copy of the book "The Stingray" by Peter Lance. It
came out in 2001 and goes into great detail about how the players from Borneo (including Richard) all tried to profit from their popularity after the first
season. They all tried to make a little extra money off their 50 million+ new fans, but CBS came down hard on them and basically told them "tough
shit." CBS owned all their life rights, it owned all of their story, and if they didn't play by CBS rules then they were cut off at the knees. What
started out as a book about how Richard Hatch was an arrogant asshole eventually turned into an expose about how CBS contracts were completely unfair and how
they basically boiled down to slave labor. It is easily one of the most informative books about Survivor ever written.

I don't suppose you could tell us who this was? I'll PM you. Although I've said it before in other threads, so if you dig around you should be able to find out. He was one of the players on an earlier season. |

I Think the reason they get so many mactors is because they find so many people trying to get jobs for other cbs sitcoms dramas and divert them to the survivor
casting dept.
