Okay, I want to go back and change some INVs from earlier seasons. For example, Palau episode one. I think Jenn should get a UTR1 rather than the INV she
got. When she was selected by Gregg in the pick 'em, she went directly to hug Katie. That was a strong indication that Jenn would be loyal to Katie to
the end. Then Jenn selected Coby, a clear foreshadowing of the Coby/Janu/Jenn/Gregg alliance that threatened to overthrow the Tom/Ian/Katie alliance. I
believe Jenn even yawned once, maybe while snatching the tribe flag in the IC.

Episode 5 - Who's In, Who's Out, Who has a Plan to Make It The editors tell us the thumbs up - thumbs down on the remaining players. Previously on: .....
JP: "...but the fiercest predator in Gabon was the yellow tribe!..." ...."...Fang...foolish and weak!..." JP: ![]()
"...At TC...they (Old Fang) acted as if they had a death wish and weakened their tribe yet again...Ace lost one of his closest allies..." Opening scene, Post TC
The strategic battle between Sugar and Ace, and Crystal begins:
Ace conf.: "Maybe I can pull off another coup...I've got Sugar in my pocket."
Sugar conf.: Maybe I should have been less bummed at the boot!
Crystal: "Sugar has the idol. I gotta get rid of her!" Kota: ...... ...
Randy tells his plan to make the End-Game: Randy:
"This new Kota tribe...It's wonderful...way way better than Fang, so I have no complaints." "..If they had to vote people out right now /break/ they'd vote the old Fang people out /break/ But, ya know, I'll work on 'um /break/ and they say adapt, they mean adapt, and /break/ this crusty old man can do it!" Matty steps away from the game: Matty: ... ...
"Decided to...step out of the game for a second...appreciate the simplicity of life and the pure things. It makes you appreciate Gabon." RC - We are reminded that Marcus is the anointed one. Ace gets some more decoy winner stuff. Randy is on track: Susie: "They voted out Jackquieeuiee!" Corrine: "Ahh!!" ..
Marcus: .. ..
(Polishes his Leadership merit badge.), "Guys. Let's focus on the challenge. We'll talk about it later." Ace is shown worried too about the Jackquieeuiee vote.
JP during the RC: "Big reception by Randy! Kota making a comeback!" ![]() ![]()
Randy continues to fulfill his end-game plan. Marcus tells us who on Kota is out of the end-game.
We are shown who is in. And who has a chance if he plays his cards right: Charlie conf.:
Kota has fruits and vegies and it's good here. "I feel sorry for all those Fang members 'cause all they're eating is rice with no flavor and we have tons and tons of food here, ...The rich are definitely getting richer here!" Marcus conf.: ....
'Dan is pledging devotion so strongly that no one believes him.' Camera shots of everyone's complete disbelief of Dan: ![]() ![]()
Marcus conf.: Susie's so out of it, she doesn't seem behind anything we're doing. ![]()
"...I don't have the confidence that when we get to the merge that these (Fang) people have got my back." Randy's confessional immediately after Marcus' statement:
"...The challenge was fun...did I kick ass or what?! My plan right now is to just continue to win challenges and not rock the boat and I will be Kota yellow ro the end!" Sugar Shack: ...![]()
Sugar, about the lame strategic efforts of the old Fang members: "...The joke's on you!" Fang melts down: ..
Crystal: "Eat your rice!" GC: "...can't take it any more!.." Ace: "They're cracking at the edges... These people are gonna implode!" Ace has inherited Randy's role of sizing up Fang as self-destructive. Matty: ... ..
"...Crystal's losing it. GC's bugging out. It's all over the place. It's a bunch of insanity!" Ken: Narrates the GC bug-out. Kelly decides to get some big TV crotch exposure: (This has absolutely nothing to do with this post, but couldn't resist.) ... ..
Kelly: "What if he got eaten by a monkey, dude?" ... "Dude, this is gonna suck! Why don't we all scream at the same time?" Crystal:
"...I'm just getting fed up from the tantrums by a grown adult!"..."I'm not going out to the dock to yell at a grown man." ![]()
The IC Randy continues to be shown as fulfilling his end-game plan: Dan, when Kota wins: "Great job Randy!"
Pre-TC Fang.
Crystal and old Fang are panicked by "the fiercer predators" Ace and Sugar. The stage is set for TC: GC conf.: Quitting.
Sugar to Ace: "I trust you." ![]()
Ace to Sugar: "We're gonna make it to the merge. On the other tribe we were dead. Watching them (Fang) destroy themselves, it's a pleasure to watch." Kelly, Kenny, and Crystal: Tonight is the only night to blindside Sugar!
Matty: "We gotta vote G!"
Tribal Council ![]() Sugar plays a skillful game. Crystal is defeated in her plan. Ace looks the mastermind. Matty: "...There's no quitting. You can't give yourself that option." Crystal, the Olympic Warrior, nods in agreement. ![]() ![]()
JP:
"Sugar, how clear are you that you might be going home because 'I don't even know anybody'". Sugar: ...
"Right, I feel like it could be me... (Gets a look from Crystal)...It could just as easily be me tonight so I brought my bag."
(Kenny comments about being frustrated that Sugar might have the idol.)
JP: "Sugar, what's your strategy...?"
Sugar: "Nobody asked me if I had the idol, actually."
JP: "Does that strike you as odd?"
Sugar: "No, considering that you're allowed to go through people's bags." (Cymbol crash) (Cut to Crystal)
Sugar: "So, no it doesn't surprise me."
JP: "So you think your bag has been gone through?... Or, you don't know?"
Sugar: "I don't know!" (Big 'whatever' shrug.) (Cut again to Crystal making a knowing face.)
JP: "Do you keep your bag with you?"
Sugar: "Nope! I keep it out so that anyone can go through it if they want."
JP: "Crystal. Crazy to leave your bag out or crazy smart?"
Crystal: "Crazy. To leave your bag out."
JP: "Sugar, do you really truly not care if people know you have the idol?" Sugar: "Maybe there's a sense of power, knowing that somebody has the idol and maybe you don't want to vote against them because they might use it to vote you out." ![]() ![]()
JP: "Okay, time to vote..."
After the vote, Sugar and Ace share a look. You decide what it means, but I see it as reminding us that Ace is the ringleader, not Sugar. .....
--------------.......................--------------------..........................--------------------------...............................------------------ Some thoughts on Ep5 The editors tell us that the Old Fang is weak and foolish. This has been reinforced over and over again, from the beginning of the season. Only one Fang was singled out for a different edit, Randy. Matty has been a more positive character, but his story has never become complex. He goes OTTP this week. Marcus has his ownership of the win reinforced again. He tells the tribe to stay focused on the game. He pronounces who he intends to keep and who is at risk of being removed for lack of trust. Both Dan and Susie have their death sentences pronounced and reinforced with camera shots. Only Randy gets a CP plan to survive to the end-game. The episode then shows his plan working in both the challenges and in "Previously on..."'s review of Randy, "scoring all three goals for Kota!" Randy looks set for the end game. Crystal was set opposite Ace/Sugar all episode. Ace tells Sugar that they will make the merge. Sugar's CP edit this episode is interesting. Ace tells us that he has Sugar in his pocket. But Sugar has told us that people think she is dumb, because of her looks and personality. But we've been shown that Sugar is smart and understands the game. This episode gave Sugar lots of time to show her skills. It also showed Sugar as defeating Crystal. A significant aspect of Sugar is revealed this ep. Does she make the merge and not Ace? Great episode. |

Clarity question, FLF.
"This new Kota tribe...It's wonderful...way way better than Fang, so I have no complaints." "..If they had to vote people out right now /break/ they'd vote the old Fang people out /break/ But, ya know, I'll work on 'um /break/ and they say adapt, they mean adapt, and /break/ this crusty old man can do it!" Is "break" suggesting a camera shot cut or do you mean that the phrase was spliced from different sources? On average listening, I thought the "adapt" to "crusty" line was done at once, but did you hear something to suggest otherwise? Michael |

Except Randy's plan isn't CP - there's no depth to it at all, particularly this episode. Yes, he continues to be shown doing well at the
challenges, and the editing has set him up to outlast Dan and Susie and make the merge. However, his plan right now consists of hoping Kota will allow him to
finish fifth.

OTH: Using headphones, the breaks are pretty obvious. Even the grammar gets mangled from time to time. The quality of
the audio varies as well.
Splicing the confessionals are probably done most of the time to make the rambling speech more concise. It also cuts out a hell of a lot of "ums" and "uhs". But it can change the meaning from what was said in reality. For me, the most important aspect is that the editors see it as an important enough scene to shape. Manipulation = something to pay attention to in the fabricated story. That Randy was set aside from Dan and Susie (and Fang in general), and got positive confirmation at all three challenges shown (including the recap), points to his plan probably working. TLS: Randy's speech tells us that he is aware of his situation, his obstacles as an outsider and "crusty old man", and how he plans to get to the end, despite them. TLS:He says nothing about taking fifth place. He tells us, "My plan right now is to just continue to win challenges and not rock the boat and I will be Kota to the end!" Does this guarantee his making the merge, much less making the end game? No. But showing him reinforcing his speech by positive challenge SPV bodes well that his words have weight. And it is so-o-o CP. |

gf, to say that Susie's character developed this episode because Marcus said
"Susie's so out of it she doesn't seem behind anything we're doing." is a real stretch. ..isn't it?

Thanks, FLF. Even without headphones, I'm pretty good at noticing breaks and tweaks. (Used to edit things like that a lifetime ago.) That's one that
I couldn't catch by the "naked ear". Makes you wonder how hard it was to keep coming up with "Mmmm hmmmm"s for Cassandra.

gf, to say that Susie's character developed this episode because Marcus said "Susie's so out of it she doesn't seem behind anything we're doing." is a real stretch. ..isn't it? I understand that. That's why I said it was a minuscule amount of character development, but it was still more than Corinne got (who was definitely invisible). Anyway, as I said before, I don't have a strong opinion on it, so if she gets INV1, it's not gonna to be a big deal to me...... Eliminated thru invisibility...... and she was already eliminated long before this regardless of her INV1/UTR1. |

Warrior and everyone pushing for INV for Susie:
Of course it doesn't matter at this point for Susie. She's been out from the beginning. And if she was a lead contender for winner, this would have probably sunk her. So, UTR1 or INV seem equal here. But Susie got definite tone this edit. How can someone be INV, which means absolutely no relationship or contribution to the story, and also have tone? On first watching, I wanted to invent INVN, because her edit was so nothing. But the fact that she has definite tone, means she belongs in the UTR column. You need some story to get a tone. I stand by UTRN1 for Susie. |

Well, it's not that I don't care. I just don't have a strong feeling one way or another like I have had in past weeks for other ratings, but I don't think we should stop caring about her rating just because she's eliminated. I'm not saying that's what you were suggesting either, but I'd rate her UTR1 for my reasoning even if she was the top contender. |

Fine, FLF. Randy's words have weight - that still doesn't make his edit this episode CP. It just means he got a better quality edit than Dan or
Susie. There's still no insight into how he plans on doing anything or even why he's making the decision to be a Kota to the end (whatever that
actually means). His edit is the equivalent of having the editors briefly flash a spotlight on him and saying "Watch him! He's important."
without actually providing us anything relevant to watch whatsoever.

Susie had tone ???????? So she goes from INV to UTRN ???????
Phoenix, how many N tone ratings did Susie get this last episode, please and thank you. |

TLS: (About Randy) Yes there is. He plans to "adapt", and "work on 'um", "to keep winning challenges and not rock the boat". This is far more insight and self-awareness than Dan or Susie have ever shown. His reason for wanting to be a part of Kota yellow is obvious. His edit has spent all season showing that Randy has no faith in his original tribe to survive. Whereas, Kota, he says, "It's wonderful! ...Way better than Fang, so I have no complaints." He told us last ep that he's outnumbered as a new (Fang) arrival and will be picked off. His only alliance source is the Onion Alliance (which, btw, needs someone to replace Jackuieuieeuiee.) |

FLF,
Just because Dan and Susie show even less insight isn't a reason to consider Randy CP. |

Randy was the most obvious CP this edit. Anyone who says otherwise is just crazy. We got into his end-game plan, and his current plan. He was the only person I
gave a CP this episode.
Oh, and he got CPP2 anyways so lets not discuss it ^_^ Done done done! |

CP - Complex personality
1) CP means a character that is well-developed. Their editing has depth to it, and their choices are presented to the audience so that we get an insight into their thinking. We generally see their strengths and flaws. Not too surprisingly, these are the major players in the course of the game, and it is their choices that shape the story. 2) CP shows complexity of thought about the game, and or complex emotions that might be construed as Positive or Negative. " Randy qualifies as CP definitely. He wasn't MOR because he was shown throughout the episode, and each time strategic, and then reinforced his strategy by doing well in the challenges. He wasn't OTT because he wasn't distracting us from the game, he was bring us to the game and reminding us about strategic dynamics and where HE stands. |
