To be fair, the clue said you could physically see the idol's location from where he was, and that sand pit was fucking nowhere near his line of sight.

Here is what the clue on the parchment said:

''Across the lake you see so well
There lies a sandy crater
The object hidden in its floor
Will surely help you later.''

From where Dan is standing at the table and reading the clue, you can see across the lake and a foot path.
If he had employed his little grey cells, he would have realized that he should cross the lake, follow the foot path and it would take him to the sandy crater.

It stands to reason that he would not be expected to search all over kingdom come for the idol.

But, that is what he chose to do. Peering into the water. Scratching through weeds. Digging into grass. And, he obviously does not know what a crater is.
