Don't be tempted Remove this ad In order to appreciate the beauty and brilliance of Survivor, you would have to watch an entire season. Characterization, plot building, suspense, drama, etc. all build up slowly throughout a season. On the other hand, The Amazing Race has won every single Emmy because the voters (who are most likely not reality show fans/regular viewers) only get to watch one episode for each nominated show. You don't need an entire season to build drama and suspense for TAR.

This is the first time TAR has lost the "quirkiest/oldest" players first, unlike on Survivor (Sonja, Debb, Jim, Tina, Chicken, Fairplay) The best TAR also requires a whole season to build up characterisation (TAR1-3) but there are always fewer key players so it's easier to pick up. But there are plenty of similar stretches of Survivor that don't rely on back-story: e.g. most of the end of Exile Island was just "Terry vs. Casaya".

It pales in comparison to Survivor but TAR doesn't produce villians and backstabbers and doesn't require underhanded game play which hurts Survivor in the long run. TAR is the more PC pick of critics and such.

Sure, it's basically the same formula over and over, but the editing demands on a show like that must be enormous. I like Survivor more as a show, but from an editing standpoint I think the Amazing Race is about as good as it gets. I think they deserve every single one of their Emmys. In terms of editing and storytelling, I think Survivor has basically just been "going through the motions" since about season five.

"I like Survivor more, but TAR is a better show." I love TAR, but the one thing I notice about it is that of all the major shows, it is the one I am least invested in(TAR1 and TAR3 excepted). It's because the show is about the race itself, not so much the racers. Even in the loudest, dumbest action movies, I still want to know who everyone is, and to see their character

I mean, The English Patient is certainly a lot better movie than Friday the 13th Part 6, but that doesn't mean I like it more. One thing I have always noticed about TAR (which goes right along with what you said) is that you can turn it on in any episode, and you can jump right into the action. You don't have to know who the characters are, you don't have to know what the alliances are, and you don't have to know what all the backstory is. With TAR, every episode is pretty much self-contained, so it is far more accessible to the casual viewer. You can jump into the show at any point during the season, and you will enjoy it just as much, because you don't have to watch everything. And I believe it is the only reality show on TV you can probably say that about. If I were to miss two early episodes of The Mole or Survivor (which has never happened), I wouldn't even bother with the rest of the season. It would be dead to me. But with the Amazing Race, that wouldn't be a problem. I know I can turn on the finale of any AR season, and I would probably be able to get into it. And to me, that is why it wins the Emmys. It wins because it has much more broad-based appeal than Survivor does. The only people that watch and get into Survivor are hardcore Survivor fans. So yeah I agree with you to a point. TAR has far less character development than Survivor, and far less "storytelling" behind it. But that doesn't work against it, because TAR doesn't depend on it as much. Every episode is self-contained with a beginning and an ending, which is why TAR benefits more from the "send in only one episode to the voting committee" rule.

If you watch enough, it actually becomes pretty predictable.

Survivor at its best is pretty much as good as it gets in reality television, but TAR is a lot more consistent--which may or may not be a good thing. But like Mario said, practically any episode of TAR can stand on its own, whereas you lose a lot of context when you take an individual episode. Take the John boot in Marquesas. Great episode for sure, but without the backstory of the Gabe boot and the pre-swap and pre-merge tribal dynamics, you can't appreciate the power shift. It's more, "Oh, the old guy is working with the black guy now when he swore he wouldn't. Neat." A random episode of TAR sucks you in even when you don't know everything that happened before. I mean, really--save for TBC episodes, every episode of TAR has a winner and a placement order for every single team. You start fresh every week.
