Good job to the poster above me. 18. It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
One of the best parts about this show is there is absolutely NO straight man (in a comedic sense) at all. The first episode I saw was the one where they think Charlie was molested, and I went through each character trying to figure out which one would be at least somewhat normal. It wasn't until about 10 minutes through the episode that I realized each character is certifiably crazy. Even the ones who make guest appearances are messed in the head - some even more so than the main cast. The dynamic between the characters is really hard to translate onto paper. They bicker as though they're Vince Vaughn and Owyn Wilson in Wedding Crashers, they're as pathetic and immoral as Peter from family guy, and they are as delusional and unaware of themselves as Tyra and Jade from ANTM. All of these examples half explain how the show works, but only to an extent. I really suggest watching it right here. The humour present in this show is in some ways similar to Family Guy - it is an in-your-face style of comedy that consistently talks about controversial topics (ie. Abortion, racism, cancer etc.).To someone with a weak stomach it would be considered very offensive. But, I think it differs in a pretty substantial way; it may joke around about controversial topics but the characters are always the butts of the jokes. At times they probably overstep the boundaries, but that really is part of the humour. The other aspect of the comedy that I love is its recurring characters and jokes. I love a show that can reward its consistent viewers with extra easter eggs, but not punish the ones who don't have time every episode. The production of this show is pretty cool. First of all, Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton (Mac and Dennis respectively) are actually responsible for the creation of the show. I think its pretty rare for the people who created a show to actually act in it. Second, it combines four virtually unheard of actors with Danny fucking Devito (That 80's show doesn't count, NO ONE watched that show for more than an episode). I'm not gonna lie, when he was first added to the cast, I was kinda pissed because I thought he would steal the spotlight, but he really doesn't. Even the way that Danny Devito entered the show is cool. The first season is about four characters (Dennis, Dee, Charlie and Mac) and its great, however as it was airing Danny Devito saw it, and basically he thought it was so funny that he just called up the producers and basically said "Hi, I don't know if you know who I am, but I'm Danny Devito, and I really like your show . . . and I want to be on it". Naturally, they accepted, and he now plays the Frank, Dennis' and Dee's dad.*** Oh, and as a side note, the show makes some really funny comments on society. Oh, and Dennis is hot.
So...why isn't it higher? Well, as much as I like it, it is absolutely impossible to get emotionally involved with any of the characters, and for me that is one of the most important aspects of any show. Also, I really don't think that it makes that much of an attempt to be the best show ever . . . it just aims to be a damn good one that you'll be happy occupied a half hour of your time.

I just want to make sure that everyone knows I was kidding about the whole That 80's Show thing. In fact, I never saw it and had no idea Glenn Howerton was
on it before someone mentioned the connection between him and Brittany Daniel both being cast members. I was going to complain about the show being too low,
but I understand your reasoning with the whole not being able to get emotionally invested thing.
I hope the spoiler is pointing to either The Wonder Years or The Adventures of Pete and Pete |

I love that cartoon, Darius! Justice is served! I never like that smuggish little mouse skank bitch Jerry. All he ever does is torturing Tom for fun. And this is from a person who hates cats in real life :P |

Does anyone remember the sitcom "Starved"? I thought it had a lot of potential.

Go ahead and threadjack. It draws attention away from the fact that I am bad at updating this consistently :D.
Oh, and I have decided that the #17 spot will be a tie, but no one has guessed either show (nor do I think that anyone will). They are both kids shows though. |

Is it gonna be something like Sesame Street? Besides Nickelodeon cartoons, I think the only other shows I watched as a kid were like Pokemon...

As I mentioned to you all earlier, #17 is a tie. Here is the first half. The other should
be up very soon.
Sorry for the wait. Ive had to write 25 pages of essay over the last week. I have about
10 more to do, so the updates should start to become a little more frequent in the near future.
17a. Rugrats
In many ways, this show was a children's version of the Ed Sullivan show for the 90's... EVERYONE watched it. This was one of my favorite shows ever as a kid, but in no way was I unique because I was just like every other kid between the age of 6 and 10. In fact, I remember having frequent discussions on the bus to school about last night's episode of Rugrats, and it wouldn't be uncommon for the subject to spread through to every kid on that bus. This show was like kiddy crack. Rugrats was about the adventures of four babies and a bratty little toddler. The story was told from the eyes of the babies and we got to see their perspective on the world. Tommy, Chucky, Phil, Lil, and Angelica were all hilarious and surprisingly well done characters for a kids show (especially Tommy and Chucky). Later on, other babies were added, but I never really watched at the time when they were on the show. The parents of the kids were also pretty prominent figures in the show, and by far the coolest was Stu, Tommy's dad. Also, Tommy's family had goofy a dog named Spike which I came to love. Just writing about this show makes me feel a little nostalgic. BUT, that is not the only reason why this show made the list. I actually watched an online episode earlier this week to make sure that I wasn't remembering things inaccurately, and the show was actually high quality. It is the type of show that I recognize is not aimed at me, but that I still find funny. If I was a parent I would have loved for my kids to watch this show because it had good moral messages while also being funny enough for me to enjoy at least somewhat. The mindset of the babies was actually about that of an 6 or 7 year old, but they still liked to do what babies do, which was pretty cool. The writers were able to write in a manner that was really relevant to kids. While this seems obvious, what I mean is that writers actually had the psychology of kids down pat. In the episode I watched yesterday Phil and Lil talk about 'taker-backers' to Tommy, and this was the kind of concept that would speak to me as a kid. The animation style was pretty cool. It was a well drawn show and the characters all looked really goofy (especially Dede's hair). But even better than its animation was its soundtrack . . . more specifically the theme song. It was just perfect and conveyed the style of the show really well. They were also one of the first shows I remembered watching to pull off the double 10 minute episodes. The show was tremendously successful. I didn't realize when I started writing this, but the show lasted 13 seasons! Also, it was made into a few movies. And I was looking at wikipedia, it was made into a bunch of video games. It even won day-time emmys, and was nominated for a real one, among many other awards. So overall, I don't tend to rate kids shows very high, but this show rates higher than it normally would have if it wasn't a kids show because it was able to connect to kids, had great animation, awesome music, and a unique sense of humour, and transcended the conventional kids show. Also, this show also made me feel special as a kid because I shard a name with the main character. |
