Remove this ad Please lock and delete and flame if this has already been asked or theorized. So the BF is getting into LOST, and has seen a few of the more recent episodes. But because he has so many questions, we bought the DVDs, and he's starting to watch from season 1. When the group goes out to go get the dynamite from the Black Rock, he noticed it was located on land, and not near the shore. Even the group noticed that too. Someone (either the BF or the group) mentioned it was possible that a sunami or something like that caused it. But, then once the BF started to think about it, he said that it's possible that Ben, or someone else, had moved the island, it when it reappered to it's current location, it 'popped up', and caused the boat to appear where it is now, in the middle of the island.

We can assume that the frozen wheel in the ground was used by early island inhabitants..thus, the island "moved" at least once or twice before Ben used it. So, your BF is right to think that the island popped up underneath the Black Rock, shipwrecking it. What we CANT yet assume is whether the island is being moved in space, or in time. My opinion is time. But time is so closely related to space anyways, its kinda the same thing :P all relative.

And it's never been explained how the Black Rock wound up so far from shore, just like it's never been explained how a small plane that took off in Nigeria wound up on an island that's seemingly well outside that plane's flight range.

It would have to move in space too, otherwise it wouldn't "disappear". It's interesting about the plane. You could assume that maybe the island had been moved between the time Eko's brother's plane crashed and the time 815 crashed. But Eko's brother's crash probably wasn't all that long ago in the grand scheme of things. Do we have a timeline on that?

One could argue that if it were a real island it would "develop" over time so you could conceivably go to a time where it hadn't broken the ocean surface yet. But then everyone on it would drown. Plus, I don't think it is a real island. What it is exactly, who knows. Something they will hopefully explain some day. Countdown to cindi's "I hate time travel" in 3...2...1...

And there were no time traveling islands, just a Delorian. It's a comic book that Walt found and was reading, even though it was in Spanish. It was eventually revealed to be Hurley's, they showed him reading it on the plane at one point. That particular cap is from Special.

If you subscribe to Einstein's special theory of relativity, than time and space are one in the same. Don't ask me to explain it, I don't fully understand it.

Maybe there's one at a time, or one that sweeps around in space and time, or there are multiple ones that exist simultaneously to different points in time. And except for the conduits the entire island might exist in a closed universe, as evidenced by the difficulty for anyone to leave the island by boat or to find it from the outside world. I'm still stumped as to what the world or universe in which the island does exist because the ocean, sky, and sun appear to be more or less normal with 24 hour days. Maybe it's just offset in time relative to the real world by 30 minutes or whatever. Ben did have a star chart which may have indicated that the stars might be in slightly different places in a different time, but again it's hard to figure out how you could see the stars and moon in a universe that's closed in a region or bubble not so distant from the island. As far as the Black Rock, I don't have a clue. It could have entered through a wormhole and been plopped down where it is or the island could have materialized underneath it during a move. On the other hand it could have also been moved up there natives for some crazy Easter Island like reason, the smoke monster could have moved it, or the island can also rise and fall into the ocean like Atlantis.

I meant, in the 1800's or something (a long time ago), the island appeared undermeath the Black Rock...as it was sailing in what was a second before an open sea. Lets not forget (my theory anyways) that turning the frozen wheel send the island BACK in time, thus no longer being in the ocean in "real" time (when the black rock was sailing over it, when flight 815 was flying over it, etc) When the wheel isnt turned (or the modern version of the button being pushed, isnt pushed) the island pops back into the present...thus causing anything that was there a sec before to crash into it..whether it be plane or boat. Since the beginning of Season 1, the island was no longer being bounced back in time (thus allowing the plane to crash into it) and when Swan/button hatch melted down, the island popped back into the present permanantly (no longer being bounced back every so often) thus allowing others to find it. At the end of last season, the wheel was turned again, thus disappears again.
