10. You Only Move Twice (Season 8)
Hank Scorpio was a great one-episode character, and it was nice to see Homer succeed at his job in such a spectacular fashion. It also showed how much the family dynamic can get screwed up by moving the Simpsons out of the dysfunctional Springfield. The plot may have veered towards ridiculousness with Scorpio being a super-villian and Homer owning the Denver Broncos, but the humor and the more down to earth aspects of the plot makes up for it. Oh, and the Scorpio theme song at the end is great.
Quotes:
Apu: Hello. I am not interested in buying your house, but I would like
to use your rest room, flip through your magazines, rearrange
your carefully shelved items and handle your food products in an
unsanitary manner. Ha! Now you know how it feels!
Homer: Thank you. Come again.
Hank: You will notice, my new best friend, that we are pretty casual
around here.
Homer: Yes, sir. I will notice that. Very casual, Mr. Scorpion.
Milhouse-looking Kid: Hey, Bart, do you have a best friend yet? 'Cause I've been looking for someone to boss me around.
9. Homer vs. Patty and Selma (season 6)
I've always thought the Homer/Patty+Selma dynamic was great, and it's the focal point of this episode. The whole Bart as a ballerina subplot is just ok, but good enough not to hurt the overall enjoyment in anyway. And Homer actually shows some heart at the end, despite being abused by Marge's sisters the entire time.
Quotes:
Carl: Homer, quit wallowing in self-pity. Pull yourself together and
come get drunk with us.
Selma: Come on, Homer: you can't spell "obsequious" without I-O-U.
Homer: I'll have to trust you on that.
Lisa: Hey, Dad. Whatcha doin'?
Homer: Daddy has very important work to do. He's looking through
the want ads to find a part-time job.
Lisa: Dad, that's a gag paper we got at the carnival.
Homer: Oh. No wonder I didn't hear about Bart being elected world's
greatest sex machine.
