Edguardo only realised during tribal too that he might be going. So still, somewhat blindsided.

He didn't get blindsided. I was forwarded your posting of the 10 things that bothered you most about Reality television. I would have to agree with you on most of them. When I took the rap for Gervase's cow comment it was more the productions fault for bringing it back up the next day…Jenna blew it up bigger then it was the night before and saved her neck with it. I did see it coming and did an interview 10 minutes before we left for tribal council…I said "I ain't coming back tonight" You can tell when Jenna, Gretchen and Colleen get mad at you…they stop looking you in the eye. Of course they didn't air that.

He may have hoped that Darrah or Sandra might be swayed to vote with him and Jon, but he certainly wasn't counting on it.

For Example when Julie was voted off in Vanuatu she knew she was getting two votes. She knew it was her or Twila going that night. How is that a blindside? I thought a blindside is someone who thought they were totally safe and then went home. Meaning people did not ever thing they were even going to get one vote. Like as soon as the first vote was read for them they were shocked [Mary from FVF is an example]. If you go to a TC expecting votes [maybe not expecting to go home] i dont think it qualifies as a total blindside.

Who? Greg? Greg wasn't interested in playing the game at all. He was playing for himself and that was about it. He wouldn't have tried to convince anyone. And I got the sense that Joel wasn't close to Gretchen or Colleen at all. He just thought Jenna would have gone before him, since she was very unpopular. At least up until right before TC he thought that. Also, why the hell Joel took the heat and not Gerverse? Gervase would never take the heat for anything. He was too charming. He could have sat there on his butt 24/7, and I get the sense that if the Tagi alliance had never happened, Gervase likely would have won. There was no reason to ever vote him out. He brought something few people else in Borneo could. Likability. Everybody loved him. How would Joel handle the dynamic during the merge? He was pushing for a Pagong alliance. He was really the first alpha male in Survivor history to really get that. It was a shame he went so early, he could have been the first Colby. The only problem is that it never would have happened because Gretchen and Greg (and probably Jenna) were so anti alliance. As charming and interesting as Greg could be, I get the sense that dealing with him on a strategic level was virtually impossible. He didn't want to win, he just wanted to play Tarzan.

That will tell you everything you need to know about the first season. That's the best Survivor resource that has ever come out. Other than that, I dunno. I've written a lot of this stuff before, in various places. What do you want to know about the early seasons specifically?

They were two of the stars of the season. The only thing that a vast majority of people were disappointed in with the first season was that Richard won. Not everyone hated it, of course, but if anyone claims that he was a popular winner, they are rewriting history. Most of America thought that Pagong was the much more worthy of the two tribes. And that's not in spite of because Greg and Gretchen, that's because of Greg and Gretchen. Now if you want to go back with 20/20 hindsight and say that Borneo would have been more competitive without Greg and Gretchen in the cast, then yes, they would be considered disappointing players. But at the time that's not what 50+ million viewers really cared about. Survivor has changed a lot in the past 8 years. There's no way you can judge that first season by modern standards. It was a totally different show. Joel was just ahead of his time. Sensei, are there any transcripts left of what former castaways wrote at SurvivorCentral? Just asking for posterity reasons. Absolutely. Just go to the Internet Wayback Machine (www.archive.org) and type in survivor-central.com. You can get a snapshot of what S-C looked like at any point in time between 2002-2005. Almost all of the old columns and articles (including my own) are still there. Archive.org is one of the coolest sites on the internet.
