It's been four and one half years since ASS was broadcast. The only person in the cast that totally shocked me for being there was Amber. The female cast was pretty good considering that Colleen, Elisabeth and Sandra all turned down their offers. Not having Elisabeth was not a great loss anyway because she is very emotional (crying) and not a strong player. Jenna Lewis was somewhat popular with viewers (the girl that didn't get her letter from home) before ASS. I was somewhat surprised that Alicia was cast but they wanted a bitchy minority female given that Sandra was in no condition to return so soon. Not to mention that Alicia, Jenna L. and Amber were in the casts of one of the first 2 seasons which had extraordinary ratings back when Survivor was a phenomenon. I really don't think that some of the other women that have been mentioned that were not cast such as Neleh, Heidi etc. would have brought all that much more to the table. As far as the male ASS cast, Rupert was such a breakout character that it was a no brainer to cast him. I was somewhat surprised that Rob M. was cast over Sean Rector but given Rector's lack of prowess in the water he would have been a detriment in a season which had a lot of tribal challenges that involved swimming. Whatever your opinion of him, Mariano has a good deal of chutzpah which makes for good TV. In Marquesas, he was always up to something everytime he was on the TV screen, even though he didn't make it all that far, which justifies his being cast

I know a lot of people were thinking the same thing about Parvati, too, WTF is she doing on Micronesia over someone like Candice.

Even as an Amanda fan, I can admit I was thinking WTF when I heard she was going to be on Micronesia over someone like Peih Gee or Courtney. I know a lot of people were thinking the same thing about Parvati, too, WTF is she doing on Micronesia over someone like Candice. Courtney turned down the offer so it was academic that she wasn't in the Micronesia cast. Peih Gee is a borderline All Star in my opinion and with 4 other ethnic minorities (Yau, Cirie, James, Ozzy) already in the cast, I can see why they chose Amanda over her. I never understood why people wanted to see Candice over Parvati. Aside from the mutiny all Candice did was whine about being sent to Exile Island and suck face with Adam. With her manipulative flirting I always thought that Parvati had potential to be a decent player and she rose to the occasion with her second chance.

They had higher placements than others that were on that season and also were popular in their original seasons. Overall I felt casting hit a home run for the Micronesia 10. The fact is, what will a casual fan remember about someone like Parvati or Amanda? Nothing. Maybe Amanda was a bit more excusable since her season was the one before, but there were still plenty of more memorable people over the post ASS seasons, and even though I liked Amanda a lot in China, she was not an all star. With Parvati, maybe a casual fan remembers that she flirted with Ozzy a little bit, but the season's main story line was of the mutiny and the Aitu Four's comeback, of which she played almost no role.

Frankly, there was no need for THREE people from Cook Islands, as much as Ozzy and Jonathan were All Stars and as much as they needed girls from that season. Stephenie would have for SURE been in the cast had she not done Guatemala.

The only reasons Parvati was cast were because CI was a supposedly popular season, she's attractive, and because Candice couldn't do it. What also sucked was that they cast two "sexy, brunette mactresses" when they could have included some other type of player like Twila/Courtney (Yates or Marit)/Peih Gee. And also, when looking for people to play again, they don't look for the most popular people. They look for the people who cause the most talk/controversy/high ratings. Why was someone like Jonny Fairplay cast then? He was the statistically least popular player in survivor history. That said, there were a shitload of other reasons not to cast him. But take Jonathan then. He's only popular here, but he was a great casting choice for Micronesia.

Parvati, Amber, and Amanda all finished high enough where they're not really 2nd chance players. They do look for popular castaways which is why so many people from Borneo and Outback were cast in All Stars

Any contestant that made Final 2/3 (like Amanda) is memorable to casual viewers because you get to see how they perform before the jury and she is the all time blur queen in Survivor history. Amanda also placed fairly high in the CBS popularity polls while China was airing and I'm sure there were some people rooting for her to win when she made the finals. I was disappointed that Twila was passed over but I realize that it was not a full All Star season and putting Twila and Eliza on the same tribe again is like mixing oil and vinegar. Three females from Vanuatu on the same tribe would have been too many. I agree with the poster who said that Steph would have made the cast if she had'nt returned in Guatemala. In my opinion, with Steph ineligible, there weren't enough female contestants from the post ASS seasons to fill 9 or 10 spots for a full All Stars seasons. There were complete seasons that had no women (eg. Fiji) that were deserving and some other seasons (Palau, Guatemala, Cook Islands) where even the best female contestants are at best borderline.
