Recruiters are some of the biggest liars out there. If people are ignorant enough to sign papers without reading what they are getting into, they deserve what they get. For what it's worth... After reading for several years, but never posting (you guys scare the **** out of me, lol), I'm chiming in. I watch shows like this like one watches a train wreck without being able to turn away. I'm a 42 year old mom and army veteran. I know we poke a lot of fun on boards like this, it's generally all in good (if not clean) fun. However, watching Ryan's story brings back memories. Of course Ryan knew what he was signing up for. He's talked before about the inactive ready reserve. Yes, when you enlist you know what your total commitment is. But you have to remember that we have almost two generations that have lived in peace time. Most service men and women have been able to serve their time and then continue on with our lives. When you get out you start planning the next phase of your life. Yes you know there is the possibility of being recalled, but until recent times, it's been a distant possibility. Operation Desert Storm started 12 days before my wedding. I was in the IRR and my husband was in the active reserve. While on our honeymoon, his unit was put on alert status and I was notified that I could be recalled with 48 hours notice. Did we cry, were we scared? HELL YES. We had just started a new phase of our lives and now we might have to do a u-turn and be seperated. After a good cry, okay more mine than his, we got our affairs in order and waited while we went on with life. Of course, Desert Storm was fast and furious and we were not recalled to active duty, but I totally understand Ryan's reaction. Ryan was a very young man when he enlisted. Full of the confidence that comes with youth. Like the kids that don't think anything will happen to them when the drink and drive. Since then, he's seen friends die, friends injured, his parents and family's relief when he returned safely. Is anyone seriously going to begrudge him an emotional response to his recall? He didn't run and hide, he cried. He knows what is at stake. Let me tell you, real soldiers cry, we are not machines. From the look of the previews, he moves on and starts getting ready to return. A google search brought up a recent interview. He has returned to active duty and is scheduled to return to Iraq in April. So in closing - Don't throw the "whine card" until you've walked a mile in our combat boots!

As much as we joke around here, it's ok to occasionally look at the human side of things. I do like Ryan, but even if I didn't, I would have the same reaction about his reactions to the news. I can't imagine anyone wanting to go back or being ok with it. He is human and any human would not want to go through that again. He has my utmost respect, as to all who serve. Yes, they know what they are getting into but it doesn't mean that makes it any easier when they have to go to war. I won't begrudge Ryan any of his emotional reaction to having to return to that living hell.

Please keep on posting, at least in this thread. I don't judge anyone and their decisions regarding military service because I know I'm the biggest pussy in the world and if I was called, I'd fucking pack my bags and run out the front door. When a few friends and I went to ghetto Buffalo, NY, I ran from some sketch people on the street who were asking my friends for cigs. I just darted across the street and kept on brisk walking. When I looked back, I saw them all laughing, including the sketch people. I proceeded to get a Sub from Subway and stare down the street at them. I'm made fun of to this day. I'd shit my pants 7 times over in Iraq and die of sheer fear. People like Ryan ensure that I don't have to and I can live my life. (Kanadian army is in Afghanistan). For that, I am forever grateful for his courage and others who serve like in the Kanadian army.. If he wanted to run across the border or MIA and not go, I wouldn't judge him in the slightest. He's a great kid with a big heart and extremely bright, he's a good soul. I just hope he is safe and can come back home again in one piece, mind, body, and soul.
