S13 was the second least popular season in the old poll (beating only Fiji) - it will do way, way better this time around.

What's surprised me most, relative to CR's poll, is the popularity of Cook Islands - the 17 contestants we've seen averaged 47 places higher than
in CR's poll. That average will drop given we've got 3 people left, but 2 of them are assured of finishing higher (Yul & Penner).

Kitty Pryde1 wrote:And Colleen and Elisabeth were huge characters in their season. Rodger/Elisabeth both topped the charts, and Rudy/Gretchen were still more popular than Colleen. Its funny though that you say that looking cute and not being a bitch shouldn't = a popular character when thats exactly what Michelle was ... you've said it yourself. A slightly positive cute as a button character that wasn't negative like half of Fiji. If she were white, you probably wouldn't have liked her. Colleen, Liz, and Kim had a lot more substance than she had. And again, Michelle was FAR from a breakout character in Fiji. Jessica, Erica, Sylvia, Gary, Rita, Anthony, Rocky, Lisi, Edgardo, Mookie, Alex, Boo, Dreamz, Yau, and Earl all had more complete story arcs/airtime than she did. That's 15 out of the other 18 castmembers. Talk about superfluoulous. :P |

Michelle was like, the 5th most popular player of the season, despite being invisible and booted at the final 10.

AMYNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Best character in Guatemala by far, and seeing her and Judd as the top 2 was great. How the hell does Micronesia have six characters
still in this though? At least Kim P. is finally out, so at least there's no one entirely useless left in the running. Sucks to see Teresa gone so early,
and Hottie Jon too.
ETA: Also, please use this picture so Amy doesn't look like a hag.

There's no reason that Amy should have beaten any of them. Go my other favorites! I have a feeling a few of them are going to be out soon |

Kim was worthless in a season that had Kelly, Frank, Teresa, Big Tom, Kim P. and Ethan as root-worthy, nice entertaining characters.Except Kim WAS won of those root-worthy, nice, entertaining characters. Most people agreed with that at the time. You don't get a big following by doing nothing. Michelle was "worthless" in a season that had Yau-Man and Earl, both of whom were her allies and created the nicest alliance ever. As a result, Michelle wasn't useess so much as she was absolutely NEEDED due to just how bad Fiji would've been otherwise.Except she added NOTHING to Fiji. At all. Almost everyone had more impact/was a better character than she was. Had she not been cast, the season would have been no worse than it already was ... Earl and Yau Man WERE the alliance, they didn't even show Michelle being in as a third... she contributed nothing but falling off a fucking platform. This is coming from someone who WANTED to like Michelle. She was my pre-show fave and I tried to like her but she did NOTHING. Even Jenn did more than she did. Sorry, but for you to say Kim was useless and not Michelle is fucking retarded. And the excuse that Kim had better characters in her season is flawed because she had a good story arc and a bigger following, and Michelle was great in a useless season is BS because she didn't do anything all season long. If its true that you've only seen each season once, I suggest you go back and re-watch them. Maybe you'll see Kim had a lot more to her than you give her credit for and that Michelle was one of the most useless/invisible characters in a season full of useless/invisible characters. |

Oh well, all my top favos made the top 36 so I can't complain. Pleasantly surprised actually. I can't believe useless irrelevant borewhores like Julie and Michelle are still and this and people have been complaining about Kim P. |

Here's how I see it:
A sweetheart as a character class is just fine because it brings positivity, however, usually the sweetheart does nothing but act cute, and as a result, becomes a one note positive character. This is fine in overly negative seasons where any cuteness and sweetness is appreciated. But in seasons with plenty of characters to root for, it's easy to not give a shit about a sweetheart. Borneo: Kelly was someone to root for, as was all of Pagong, thus Colleen was forgetable to me. Australia: Rodger, Tina, Colby, Michael were all good people to root for, so Elisabeth was forgettable. Africa: The Elders were root-worthy which is already a strike against Kim, not to mention Ethan, Big Tom and Kim P., so Kim P. was forgettable. Marquesas: Kathy was someone to really root for, as was the entire underdog alliance and Hunter, Gina, and Gabe, so Neleh was more annoying than forgettable. Thailand: This would've been a great season for a sweetheart because of the overall negativity, but Tanya was an early boot. Amazon: Same as Thailand, but all the young girls turned out to be bitches. Pearl Islands: Same as above, but Michelle was an early boot. Vanuatu: Same as above, but Dolly was an early boot. Palau: Didn't need a sweetheart because of the underdog Ulongs and Tom/Ian. Guatemala: Could probably have benefitted from a sweetheart, but it was a pretty good cast as is. Exile Island: Even though I think Sally was boring as hell, I suppose she did a good job as a sweetheart. She was just majorly overshadowed by all of Casaya and Terry, hence forgettable. Cook Islands: Didn't need a sweetheart because they had a lovable tribe of underdogs in Aitu. Fiji: Holy shit, this is why Michelle was so great for Fiji. There was just absolutely so much negativity on Fiji that even Yau-Man couldn't balance it out. You had Lisi who was a vile bitch, Rocky who got far too much screen-time and was a complete asshole. Toneless women who were picked off left and right. The four horsemen that were despicable. Amidst all this, Michelle was the cute little girl that was needed to keep the season from going completely down the shitter. When the four horsemen booted her, that was just to make them even more hated. Plus, you can't blame her for getting screwed by the editting given that she was screwed by a twist. China: Amanda was the sweetheart of the season, somehow, but there were people like Peih-Gee, Denise and James (ugh casual viewing audience) along with Erik and Frosti that were root-worthy. Micronesia: Erik was the sweetheart and he was DEFINITELY needed, given just how negative the overall season seemed to be. Gabon: Sugar was obviously the sweetheart but she was actually more multi-dimensional than that. In conclusion: Michelle Y. and Erik R. are the only really successful sweethearts because they came from seasons that were overly negative and their positivity helped prevent that negative from overwhelming the season as a whole. |
