He was recruited by Eliza because she was looking for potential recruits and was referred to him b/c he was such a huge fan. He was the only player this season who seemed to understand the social aspects of the game, given that Sugar was CRYING when she voted for him. Everyone else didn't seem to get that having people actually like you on Survivor is important to winning.
