720p/1080 TVs... |

I'm thinking of finally glomming on one from Circuit City while they fiddle and burn. Is there that much difference with 720/1080 and should I go for a
Samsung, LG or Sony?

i have a 32" 720p. The bigger the screen, the more difference you'll notice from 720 to 1080. but if you're upgraded from SDTV even 720p will look
amazing. it all depends on how much money you're willing to spend.

720p is ok for a smaller TV, but 1080 is awesomeness. Might as well get that. Samsungs are great. Sony is overrated.

What they said. Keep in mind that there are no 1080p HDTV broadcasts (yet), so for actual tv watching 720 is just fine. Blu-ray and video games go full 1080p.

We just bought a 42" LG, 1080p. (I dunno what the i means). It's the bestest thing in the world. I can sit and stare at anything in glorious HD.

1080p > 1080i. 1080i is more or less the same as 720p...i stands for interlaced which means only half of the pixels show up on the screen at any given
millisecond.

It's time for me to upgrade. I've had my Plasma for almost 7 years and it was right before HDMI was commonplace, so it doesn't have it. Still looks
sharp as hell though. I love Pioneer.

I hook my computer to my 52" HD tv to watch Netflix/ Hulu movies and such and it looks great on the bigscreen.

I've been very happy with Samsung TV's. I doubt I'll ever switch to another brand.

Seriously. I grew up on Sony's, but after seeing the TV board at Best Buy and having actually owned two on my own after moving out of my parents'
place, Samsung is by far the leader in HDTV technology.

I have a 32 inch 720 pi Sony Bravia and loves it. I've heard you only need the 720 if it's a smallish room.

46" Sony Bravia 1080p is flat out amazingly beautiful. I <3 mine.

1080i is better for watching films while 720p is better for watching sports and I suppose action movies, since progressive video renders motion better than
interlaced video.

Dammit, why couldn't Circuit City wait a year? I already have enough TVs!
A dependable digital-grabbing antenna is what I need. Digital signals suck. I'm already tired of redirecting the antenna to compensate for stations broadcasting from different directions. Even the DB-4 antenna upstairs can't get certain signals at certain times of the day, under certain weather conditions, etc., so it seems like nothing will be as dependable as paying out the wazoo for cable. |

Sony is okay if you are just going to watch TV but programming that shit is damn near impossible.

I think Sharp Aquos makes an amazing TV I bought a 19 inch Aquos and loved it so much that I decided to buy a 52 inch ! The picture and color is incredible. http://www.tigerdirect.co...2808&SRCCODE=WEBGPROD Sharp LC52D64U 52" LCD HDTV Once again, Sharp, a leader in LCD technology, establishes a new design standard for LCD TVs. With a screen size class of 52", the AQUOS® LC-52D64U raises the bar by fitting large screen sizes into incredibly small footprints. By changing the layout of circuits inside the LCD panel and by reducing the number of parts, Sharp engineers developed the Slim-line design which reduces depth by 25%, allowing placement of the LC-52D64U in virtually any setting. The LC-52D64U utilizes Sharp's proprietary Advanced Super View / Black TFT Panel with multi-pixel technology, providing 10,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio with Enhanced Picture Contrast Technology and 4ms response time. The LC-52D64U features built-in ATSC/QAM/NTSC tuners and includes 3 HDMI™ (version 1.3) inputs, compatible with 1080p signals, a PC input and 2 HD component video inputs. Side terminals are included for wall-mounting convenience as well as RS-232C input for control. What Is It & Why You Need It

I hate all the current TV crap! It seems like TV is in a state of flux right now to me - that we aren't settled into a high quality standard yet where
people can just relax and watch an effing show without fussing over which of the duplicate channels to tune it to and which setting to change it to on the TV.
GAHHHH! TV needs to settle into a HIGH QUALITY standard without all the BS.
I'd say if you watch a lot of DVDs get 1080p and blu-ray. If it's mostly TV shows, 720p is all you need for right now because I don't think the signals are being sent out any higher than that. My TV says it's receiving 720p on the "HD" channels and 480 or whatever for SD channels. Which is crap. I expect better than that. But whatever. I'd buy 1080p because (hopefully) eventually broadcast quality will catch up. I kind of wish I was still using my old 32" CRT TV...everything was so simple then. |
