Is this Oregon or Maine? Portland, OR has ten times the population and cultural influence of Portland, ME, so it's earned the right to just be called "Portland". It's like asking if "Dallas" means Dallas, TX or Dallas, PA. However, Portland, OR was named after the city in Maine and is actually the result of a coin flip to decide between the hometowns of its two founders...the other choice was Boston, which would have made US geography a lot more confusing. |
