Mr. Darnell: Yeah. There's a big surprise coming when we get to the top 12, but I can't reveal it right now.
TVWeek: Will it change the way we think of "American Idol?"
Mr. Darnell: Well, it's not going to change what you think of "American Idol" and we don't want to do that. This show is, you know, a phenomenon. It's American, it's apple pie. We're not changing the core of the show, but it is something that will be talked about and is something I think that has some element of controversy surrounding it.
TVWeek: Do the contestants know?
Mr. Darnell: No. No one knows.
TVWeek: Is that part of it? You want to keep the contestants guessing?
Mr. Darnell: Part of it. But I also think it's more that it's a long season and you want to keep as many surprises for the audience, for the press, for everybody, as you go along. Some controversies will pop out. But this is something that we sort of felt like, here's one set of things we're doing, we're going to wait and give you the other set when we get to the final 12.

With most other Idol franchises (CI, OzI etc) I would love to see the judges have some kind of role in the finals and be allowed to keep people safe but with
this show I don't want to see the judges have that kind of power. They cause enough chaos with their bullshit pimping as it is they don't even need to
have the ability to give out immunity.

It's probably a top 13 instead of a top 12.
3 people get through each week. That gives us 9. Then they said the judges get the wildcard picks. Since there's 4 judges they add 4 and make it 13. |

no, they're gonna flat out copy X-Factor and have each of the judges pick 3 contestants to mentor throughout the rest of the competition, This whole season
so far has been X-Factor-America with their sob stories and whatnot although it makes sense since Simon is a bigger part of the show now that Nigel is gone. It
totally brings another angle of competition in the finals with the judges themselves competing against each other.
that or they do the sing-off during the results show and then the judges ultimately pick who goes home from the bottom 3.

Possible twists:
01) Somewhere along the line, there will be a duet night, where the remaining contestants are paired at random and perform two songs per duet. The team that polls the lowest is eliminated. 02) From the start of the finals, votes are converted into points, which will carry over into each subsequent round. Point values increase each round. The person with the lowest cumulative vote total each week is eliminated. The winner is the person with the highest cumulative point total. 03) They'll implement the 3-strikes rule. A contestant that places in the bottom three on three occasions will be eliminated, even if he or she did not get the least number of votes. Syesha Mercado, Nikki McKibbin and Anthony Fedorov had multiple visits to the bottom two/three. If they implemented the rule at those times, they would have not caused as much damage as they did. |

I've always wished the judges could save one contestant from going home. This saves us from shit like Nikki McKibbin being in the top 3.
