I watched Donnie Darko with a group of my friends, I found the film incredibally entertainng and although i found the concept behind the film easy, they did not.
So i Explained it to them....

They then understood, and once they understood they grasped the pure brilliance behind the story.
So for all those who found the story a little hard to swallow, I'll explain it to you.

There is a common theoretical question that has circled the world of temperal mechanics (time travel) since Einstein first proved it possible.
This is how it goes:

i can travel back in time and decide to meet my mother when they were children, long before she meets my dad and conceives me. There is an accident and I kill my own mother.......
Now my mother is dead, she wont meet my father, if she doesn't meet my father i will never be born.... (here's the killer) but if I was never born, who killed my mother?
It has plagued scientist forr decades and has become known as the temperal paradox. and this is the story behind Donnie Darko.

A WARNING TO THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM...... THIS IS NOT A REVIEW, I AM NOT IN THE HABBIT OF TELLING PEOPLE WHAT HAPPENS IN A FILM BUT IN THIS CASE I AM MAKING AN EXCEPTION.... IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE FILM AND STILL BEE SUPRISED THEN STOP READING NOW!!!!
Anyway, now thats out of the way.... i shall explain. The story is centred around Frank, the funny looking guy with the freaky bunny hat on.
Those of you who have seen the film will know that this is a man in fancy dress who runs over Donnie's girlfriend later in the film.

In the beggining of the film, An aircraft engine lands on donnies bedroom which would have almost certainly killed him, but, fortunatly forr him, he's sleepwalking on a golf course, Why? cos frank told him to go there. There is no explaination of where the engine came from...
In essence here, a man who Donnie Hasn't met yet has saved his life and so Donnie decides to do anything that frank tells him, ...just in case... But while at the course Frank tells him that the end of the worrld will come in 8 days 6hours... and so on.

There is a scene where Donnie Vandalises the school but apart from helping the story, it doesnt help me explain the theory.
The best demonstration i can give is where Donnie burns down the house of a self help guru, played by patrick Swayze. The fireffigghters find a child porn ring in the basement that wouldn't havee been found if it wasn't for the fire. Frank told donnie to start the fire.

There is then the scenes where Donniee is realizing he can see into the future and goes to a house, stuff happens (watch the film, it isn't important here) and his girlfriend is run over by the man dressed as a giant bunny....frank.
Donnie shoots Frank, this explains the 8 days thing that has been in the backround of the film. It is this exact amount of time between the meeting on the golf course to the point of Franks death.

Donnie then goes off into the hill in a fit of depression. He then realises what has happened. Donnie can control time...... I shall explain.
Throughout the fim, donnie keeeps making references to time travel, the wormholes coming out of people's chests. He can see time... not the future..... The difference is this, if donnie could see the future, he would see the people walking around in the future..... he would actually see them, seeing time is diffferent, he can see what they are going to do, not them actually doing it. The wormholes coming out of people is time, it is what is going to happen.

on realising this he understands that he can control them is a theory called temperal psychosis, the ability to control travel through time with thought.
Donniee could never really see Frank, Frank was never there, but Frank was the physical representation of Donnies Gift. Frank never told donnie to do anything, it was Donnie telling Donnie to do these things but using frank's image to do it.

It is hard to grasp. But the very end of the film pretty much explains it all. While on the hills he sees a plane, creates a time wormhole and the engine of this plane is dragged back through time along with him to the point where it lands on Donnies room (explaining the engine's origin), Donnie then stays in bed, essentially commiting suiside to save the life of his girlfriend who would never have died if she didn't meet him.
It is hard to explain in simple words but next time you watch the film, bear this review in mind and you shall see what i mean.
