I'm terrified of fires, so this gives me the creeps.

I hate wildfires. This was like the San Diego wildfires back in October 2007 when my parents planned to visit San Diego zoo which is the same date they arrive
in Los Angeles.

Apparently the fires have devastated Kinglake, north of Melbourne, where the school at which I used to teach owns a camp. Also the beautiful town of Marysville
is gone, only one building is still standing. I was living in Melbourne during the Ash Wednesday fires of 1983. This appears to be far worse. Melbourne broke
its all time record high on Saturday when it got up to 46.4C or 115.5F.

The temp actually hit 47.9C (that's about 119F).
Over 130 dead and many people injured, and they think the death toll will go much higher, once the firefighters can access some towns. It's just horrific. They are calling it Australia's worst natural disaster. Entire towns have been completely wiped off the map. I just spoke to some friends in Victoria (in South Gippsland) and they were saying that quite a few of their Car Club people have died in the fires. There's a major fire burning about 1/2 hour away from where they live so they have another scary night ahead of them. They have no TV reception cause the TV stations have exploded, they just have the radio and phone. What an amazing job the firefighters are doing. Most of them are volunteers. |

Holy crap, 119F is hot. I have been in weather that hot once, and I live in the desert southwest. Even the wind hurt, it feels like a blow dryer in your face.
It's hard to imagine what it would be like in an area that wasn't pure desert with temperatures like that. The Oakland Hills fire was fueled by 90F
temperatures.
I hope that it ends quickly. We already know it won't have a happy ending, I hope it doesn't get any worse. |

I just read that one town is now a crime scene as they think some of the fires near Melbourne were deliberately set.
Just awful. |

PRAY FOR MORE
And, erm, if a wall of fire is approaching your house, get in a car and drive away. It's not Rocket Science. That's what Drew Barrymore should have done in Scream, whilst we're at it. |

Thanks TD. It has been awful that so many people have died so horribly (the death toll stood at 176 this morning) and many others have been seriously injured.
WB1, I remember the Ash Wednesday fires - they were horrific. And yeah, like you said, these fires are much worse than that. I can't even begin to get my head around what people there are going through. |
