If so, why would you suggest we need both in these cases? -------------------------------- Also, why all of the speculation based on Erinn due to her "odd" or "carefully crafted" edit? Edgic guidelines don't say that unusual edits win or that edits with a lot of unneeded attention win. They propose a set of predictable and identifiable editing patterns that consistently predict a winner. If anything, "odd" edits are probably bad for chances in the traditional Edgic view because they don't fit a pattern. In terms of carefully crafted edits, nothing suggests that only winners receive manipulation and care in the craft of their edits. This signifies nothing more than the fact that the character is important or useful in the telling of the story. Not that I would say Erinn can't win. The only people I currently think of as eliminated or damn close are Debbie, Sydney, and Joe. Nonetheless, the arguments forwhy Erinn is a contender seem to either point to problems in her edit or at the very least things that only point to her being a long term player (place your "bets" wisely, I guess). |

Erinn is one of the viable edgic winners right now. Debra and Coach and Sydney and Joe and Sandy and Brendan and Taj and Jerry can probably be eliminated edgically. Oh, and any N's for toneless Erinn are ridiculous. |

First ratings I've done in several seasons. Done after only 1 watch. Comments only where I see there may be controversy. Visibility is directly from the
chart, as I love objectivity where possible.
Timbira Brendan - CP5 Candace - MORN5 - She was not quite the one-note villain that OTTN would signify. We didn't really get much development from her but what we got did not strike me as caricatured. Coach - OTTN4 Debbie - OTT2 - Portrayed as extremely upbeat, naive, and trusting. Erinn - MOR2 - Her TC comment tells us more about her as a person and as a character than UTR would imply. Jerry - UTR2 Sierra - CP4 Tyson - MOR3 - "I lied to your face and you bought it *hahaha*" Wants to keep with tribal plans to oust Sierra. We learned a lot from him during these scenes. Jalapao Joe - UTR2 JT - OTTP2 - The hero of Jalapao - from a SPV perspective, no less. Sandy - UTR2 - Nothing we didn't already learn from episode 1 Spencer - MOR3 Stephen - CP3 Sydney - UTR1 Taj - CP4 - I didn't see the editors crafting the positivity some are reporting. Winner Chances: Type A: Good chances: Not placing any "bets" yet. Still in contention: All players except for Joe, Sydney, and Debbie (all due to visibility) Eliminated: (see above) Type B: Good chances: Not placing any "bets" yet. Still in contention: Most players (infer from below) Weak Chances: Sierra (too complex so far and her story could probably easily be told from an A perspective) Eliminated: Coach (too negative), Debbie (INV), Joe (vis), Sydney (vis). Type C (ie: eliminated unless a totally new and unseen winner pattern emerges due to both A and B edits being impossible to craft): Debbie Joe Sydney |

Something to consider while we are on the topic of Erinn.
She should be considered a contender for the following reasons: (1) She was featured in key moments during the episode where her tribe went to TC-in multiple discussions with multiple people from her tribe (2) She spoke at the tribe's first TC and it was about something more than just worms and fire. It was about tribal dynamics. (3) Her few moments in episode 2 built on top of the few moments in episode 1. In other words, her character actually grew and we saw valuable insight into the dynamics on her tribe. Does this make her the front runner? No-there are bigger fish in the lake. However, she's already much more complex than Danni and Bob were by episode 2-let's not forget that. Danni was never shown in tribal dynamics before her tribe went to TC. Also, despite speaking at her first TC, she didn't say anything deep. Her only confessional was about how Bobby Jon is so strong. There was no SPV. But she needs to probably be somewhat visible next episode to keep her chances. Sierra on the other hand can become somewhat background-like next episode and still be alive. |

But to the point, I understand the UTR4. The numbers may point in one direction, and the edit another way. Someone could come on and talk about why the Sprint Sidekick is the best cell phone in four confessionals, and even though the numbers would be there, the memorability and game facets would not. |

No way was Sierra UTR. But that's one person's ratings so it won't affect anything anyway. Sierra was involved in searching for the idol, the
pre-TC discussion, the original target of her tribe, had even more reaction shots than Erinn (who we are all trying to figure out), spoke at TC and gave one of
two voting confessionals.
Oh yeah, and she had 4 or 5 confessionals on top of that. Everyone who watched it was supposed to notice her in the forefront of just about everything that was happening on her tribe. So, there was absolutely nothing remotely UTR about her. My Final Ratings for Episode 2 Erinn: MOR2 Sierra: CPP4 Ben: CPN4 Candace: CPN4 Debra: UTR3 Brenden: CP4 Tyson: MOR3 Jerry: UTR2 Taj: MORP3 TJ: OTP3 Stephen: CPP3 Spencer: MOR3 Sandy: MOR3 Sydney: UTR1 Joe: UTR Contenders: 1. Sierra (but could be too much too soon-we won't know for a few episodes yet because she can be UTR next time and be safe) 2. Tyson (very very reluctantly, but there's something very Aras about him right now or maybe it's Ethan/Greg Buis in one) 3. Erinn (I am conceding by putting her in 3rd rather than my original 2nd-she is subject to change quickly considering her probable position on her tribe) 4. Brendan (his arc reminds of of Cirie from Micro) 5. Coach (I am not ready to say that this season's Rich/Lex is too arrogant 6. Stephen (although he's RobC-lite) 7. Spencer (but probably more of a narrator) Smaller chance, but not eliminated: Jerry (too little depth in a season where there is a bunch) TJ (totally the Matty/hero/good boy type) Taj ( logically, the money thing is not going to bode well for her) Gone: Debra Sydney Joe |

I agree that Sierra was CP(P)4, but I don't think ratings can be ruled out just because they don't look pretty.
Erinn was UTR2. A few random face shots don't = an increased rating IMO. She was forgettable, yet negatively skewed the one time shown. |

Oh well it looks like I'm fighting a lost cause when it comes to Erinn lol.
In some ways, I hope she gets voted out soon so that we no longer have to have the debate lol. |

Why is Erinn UTR and not MOR? Most of the arguments seem to be basing the idea on visibility (she was low vis so that's UTR). That's not the point.
Rating (in my mind anyway) is about character development. UTR signals little to none. CP signals lots of it (in a well rounded 3 dimensional way). OTT signals
lots of it (in a 1 dimensional caricature way). MOR is somewhere in the middle.
The TC question developed Erinn as a character significantly. Who knew before that moment that she was a "don't trust anybody bc we barely know each other" type of person/player? Given the weight such a comment has, learning that about her is quite interesting. That's the take-home message I get from her in this episode. Constrast that with Joe - we didn't learn anything about Joe as a player or person (save that he can eat termites - whoopdydo). There was little to no development of Joe as a character. Both players had the same visibility based on the chart, but the quality of the edits is quite different. |

From page 1: one of the little details about an UTR contestant
2) Players who receive significant face time, but little to no speaking time. That's Erinn. |

I'll concede that the official guidelines point to Erinn being UTR, but I also think the official guidelines represent MOR and UTR as what are essentially
a new way to write 2-4 or 1-3 visibility, respectively. Some of the ways each are defined come directly from statements about face time, amount of speaking
roles, SPV, confessionals, etc. These are all parts of the Visibility construct so rating Rating based on Visibility is repetitive in my mind - why have both
if they come from the same information? Nonetheless, like I said, I will admit that by the official guidelines, she is UTR2.
For my ratings and arguments, though, I'm trying to pull out what is unique about the Rating construct and using that to rate players. Even if it does not end up as a majority opinion, hopefully it does manage to point out a few key differences in players that will end up as equals or near equals on the chart (Erinn/Joe). |

As long as all of you recognize that, individually, UTR and MOR are no better than the other.
