What she said about Simon's comment to Anoop was exactly what I was thinking. Simon told Anoop he was allowed to give it back to the judges or whatever but last week when Meagan simply said I don't care [that you thought my performance was boring, monotonous etc] that wasn't okay. WTF? Then at the end before they hung up and she threw in "put the Go in Gokey" LOL. Loved it.

Cook made some innocent comment about having to impress america and not simon and simon got really pissed and started ranting about how he "understands how the show works." Simon looked pissed for the rest of the show after that.

Simon did the same exact thing with Jessica Sierra in season 4. He probably did that, because she was too similar to Carrie, so he was trying to knock her off, before she siphoned more votes from Carrie. LOL that the judges would still praise Gokey, even if he snapped a chicken's neck during a live performance. "No one ever snaps a chicken's neck like you do!"

Likability is the most important element there. Sure, you can quibble with the judges' assessment of who is or is not likable, but you can also quibble with their assessment of who can or cannot sing. It doesn't mean that the entire criterion is "crap".

When it comes to taste, there are no right or wrong opinions. But when offering an opinion on whether everybody else likes you or not without any polling data to back you up, a judge can indeed be wrong. Since Allison has managed to get voted into the Top 7, it's obvious Allison is quite likeable, and that Simon is trying to sandbag her for some reason. Not that this is anything new: American Idol has a rich tradition of using all sorts of brain-washy techniques to sway public opinion to steer the public toward TCO cough Adam cough.

And as for "polling data", we don't ask them to provide evidence on whether the singer was in key - why should their likability be any different? Obviously, it is the judges opinion, but that is what they're paid to give. Beyond that, Simon may not have polling data, but I'll bet he's got voting results. And even if he doesn't, he's seen (as the rest of us have) that Allison has been in the bottom 3 when she's never been anywhere CLOSE to the bottom in terms of singing ability. That points to another problem - perhaps one of likability... I can't gauge Simon's motives. I don't know if he was trying to help "sort her out" or to sandbag her... I do say, though, that I agree that Allison has some problem that has nothing to do with her singing ability that is keeping her from catching on with the audience and becoming a favorite...

Simon in particular uses it frequently when he sees someone upsetting the applecart. I believe he said it to Kim Locke at one point as well. I do agree though that likability plays a huge role in this competition. It's often times as much about the personality as the singing ability. A perfect example of this is Season 1. Kelly and Tamyra were pretty equally matched vocally but Kelly's personality was so infectious and she seemed so approachable and attainable while Tamyra seemed somewhat stand offish and less outgoing. Same in Season 2, except Ruben's "good personality" was a myth created by the judges comments and the first sign of manipulation by the judges to get the result they wanted.

Otherwise, she always seems cheerful, self deprecating, and doesn't talk back to the judges. I have to wonder if Simon's remarks are really more about her look. It's subjective of course, but she's shown more personality than say, Matt has.

Out of everyone left, she received the least amount of pimping in hollywood and most people didn't even know who she was until her semi final performance. In top 24 seasons this isn't as bad as you have three weeks to build a fanbase for yourself before the top 12, but with the top 36 you're pretty much relying solely on how much they showed of you in hollywood and your audition. I'm thankful she was in group 2 as the only reason she made top 12 was that she was BY FAR the best female of that group. Had she been in group 3 or 1 she would have most likely been lost in the shuffle.

We saw a whole performance from Kris, even if it was a group performance. We knew who he was before the chair episode, even though we saw very little of him. I believe Allison and Jeanine were the only ones we didn't see until the chair episode.
