I think that the producers on Survivor were looking for a certain type and because Ben is a coach and is able to manipulate he was able to give them what they were looking for to get on the show. I think that he didn't realize quite what he was doing when he wrote that due to hunger. He said it himself. He didn't gain wait to be on the show. He did work out. The 39 days is sort of like being on a starvation diet. If you've never done that, you don't know how goofy it can make you. The Army has a 14 week Ranger school where the guys (they won't let women in) get minimal food and sleep. They end up looking like prisoners from Dachau and they do some extremely bizarre things. Ben didn't know that going into starvation in shape would cause his body to start cannibalizing itself. Unless you've done research on starvation (and I was at a lab where they did - I DID NOT DO THE RESEARCH) you have no idea what it does. Okay, sorry to go on for so long about this... just defending a friend...
