No. 5 Patty Schnyder, 30 Switzerland



Ranked 17th in the world, Schnyder is ancient in women's tennis terms. She's had subpar results in slams this year, exiting in the second round at the Australian and the first round at the French.

Best Grand Slam finish since 2005: She's made the quarterfinals in the French and US Opens and Australian (twice).

Most likely Grand Slam event to win: Schynder's on the downside of a fine career, but we give her a shot at the Australian. She likes the hard courts.


No. 4 Nadia Petrova, 26 Russia



Ranked No. 11 in the world, has won nine singles titles on the WTA Tour.

Best Grand Slam finish since 2005: Made the semifinals in the 2005 French Open.

Most likely Grand Slam event to win: She's had good results on hard courts, so we'll go with the US Open.


No. 3 Jelena Jankovic, 24 Serbia


The fifth-ranked player in the world, Jankovic holds the distinction of being the only player ever to finish a year at number one on the WTA rankings (2008) without ever having won a Grand Slam event.

Best Grand Slam finish since 2005: She lost in the finals of last year's U.S. Open to Serena Williams.

Most likely Grand Slam event to win: The U.S. Open, where in the last four years she's made the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals


No. 2 Dinara Safina, 23 Russia


The current No. 1 player in the world is the younger sister of two-time slam winner Marat Safin. She's currently in the semifinals of the French Open.

Best Grand Slam finish since 2005: She made the finals of the 2008 French Open and the 2009 Australian Open, losing in straight sets both times.

Most likely Grand Slam event to win: This year's French Open.


No. 1 Elena Dementieva, 27 Russia


The fourth-ranked Dementieva won the singles gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Best Grand Slam finish since 2005: In the last two years she's made the semis at Wimbledon and the U.S. and Australian Opens. In 2004 she made the finals of the French and U.S. Opens.

Most likely Grand Slam event to win: Her most consistent results have come at the U.S. Open.
