I wonder what made Heiki so much faster than Lewis. I guess the jury is in on Toyota. Speaking of Japanese, Williams really needs a better number 2 driver to
make things interesting. I knew McLaren would get smoked from the go, but at least there are four teams ahead of Ferrari too. Nice of the FIA to make an
exception so Brawn could run under Mercedes power, so there's nothing wrong with the plant. Still... Lewis is behind Force India??? I guess Denis picked
the right time to step aside.

Funny thing is the privateers are ahead of the factory teams. Brawn Mercedes>>>McLaren Mercedes. Red Bull Renault>>>Renault. Williams
Toyota>>>Toyota.
The cool thing is Red Bull doesn't have the funky diffuser and they are still right up there. They may be the top team once they incorporate that. Same with Ferrari. |

I love how they've got Brawn down in 22, as if it were Super Aguri or something. Also: what, Brawn couldn't get any sponsors other than Virgin? Or did Sir Richard demand an exclusive deal with no other logos allowed? If anyone has the $$$ to do such a thing, or inclination even, it's him. Nice look on the car as a result. I also love how Force India remains primarily sponsored by Kingfisher. Can the pack catch up to McLaren and Ferrari? It looks like McLaren isn't going to contend right away, but what about resurgent Williams and suddenly Brawn ( ne Honda )? See the grid above. I'm still waiting for Kubica's breakout year in addition, too. Will Branson sponsor Brawn? He was certainly getting a lot of camera time in the pits, so yup Can BMW, Toyota, Renault and Red Bull play with the big kids? I always thought of BMW as a big kid, but not a particularly smart one, kind of a Baby Huey. Toyota will hang around, probably committing crimes of opportunity. Renault's a certified big boy. Plus, never ignore Flavio. He hates being ignored. I always thought that Red Bull's all about the marketing, but it looks like you all are right about Vettel. Red Bull Team B sucks though -- poor Bourdais. My addition to potential big boys? Williams. Will anyone use KERS effectively? I don't understand this yet. Now they have to be worried about how much charge they have in the batteries for braking or something? This seems unnecessarily distracting. The diffuser I understand though, although I don't understand why everyone's bitching about it. Just install the better design and race. These ffukers are getting way too litigious, but maybe that's always been the case. Will there really be more passing this season with the reduced wing? I hate the new rear wings. They look vaguely soapbox derby. Passing is good, making the cars look dorky is bad. How hot will the pit babes and grid girls be this year??? Hmm. We need a frame of reference. Please post pix of pit babes from past seasons so we can compare and contrast. Particularly from the Spanish tracks and Interlagos. Atypical Male wrote:Personally, I love the super-late night races. It's the 7AM races that I find horrific. Charming Nemesis wrote:SpeedTV interviewed some of the NASCAR luminaries about this last week. Each driver said "I wouldn't want to be leading on the final lap" -- i.e., the leader would get wrecked out. But they were also thoughtful in stressing that the season is a long slog. Anyhow, anybody notice how the non-English native speakers are adopting Hamilton's clipped accent? Thank God for Kimi. GO TEAM RUBENS! |

KERS doesn't help braking. Under braking the KERS system generates energy that is stored in batteries. Those batteries feed an electric motor that is
attached to the engine. It adds about 60hp. They are allowed to use this horsepower boost a maximum of 6 seconds a lap. You cannot save those 6 seconds for the
next lap to have 12 seconds. 6 seconds per lap whether you use them or not.
You can use it strategically around the lap to make for an overall faster lap, or you can save it for an extra oomph in a passing maneuver like in the old turbo days. |

Oh so the extra oomph is generated by braking. I like the turbo analogy -- that makes sense.
So what governs the duration of the 6 seconds? An onboard computer I presume? I'd hate to think of Bernie and his minions sitting around the track with stopwatches. The point is, does the driver have to time the seconds himself? Also, what resets the once-per-lap clock? When they cross the start line? I'm wondering what happens if driver B is trying to overtake driver A, almost gets him with KERS at a turn just before entering the start/finish straightaway, hounds him down the straight, and then tries to use KERS on turn 1 just out of the straight? Or is it one lap from the last point on the track where they used it? Does that make sense? |

It's controlled by the onboard control unit. Resets at the start finish line. They probably have a countdown clock on the steering wheel.
The TV overlay graphics now have KERS section in the form of a battery. You can see it empty as they use it. That's only on the graphics with the rev counter/brake/throttle. |

I spoke prematurely about Toyota, not realizing they were back in the pack due to a rules infraction - Too much flexibility in the rear wing.
KERS looks like a bust. The highest KERS car is Massa at 7th and Hieldfeld in the KERS BMW is well back of Kubica in the non-KERS model. Too much weight to make up in 6 seconds I guess. |

An oldie from the Aussie GP. Anna Lind-Hansen before she was a contestant on Big Brother Australia 2006. My favorite contestant even before I knew she was an
F1 grid girl.

The pit girls were a inexcusable let down. Cargo shorts?
So what, did Barrichello affirmatively stall? This race is a mess. No way they should be starting it with the shadows already that long. And this safety car is WTF writ large. On track late, and still hanging out. And pissing off Massa -- whatever he's mad about, my money's on him. |

Unbelievable. To my eyes, Kubica's to blame -- Vettel had nowhere to go.
Bravo to Rubens for working his way back up to what should've been fouth. Loved it when the radio transmission came over telling him to slow the fuck down. Note that the weasel weaseled his way from dead last minus Toyota to 4th. |

Holy crap! So Hamilton gets points and Ferrari gets bupkis? Team Brawn really needs to quicken up their pit stops. ( I also think the electrical KERS has to go - Some track marshall is gonna get electricuted ) |

I'd pin the blame a bit more on Vettel's side. He was on the inside, Kubica was ahead. On the inside you have to brake much earlier to make the corner
because you have a sharper corner to take. He didn't want to give way and went too hot into the corner.
But it really was just a racing incident. Two guys fighting hard for position. |
