I recently reconnected with HBO after a long absence. It premiers Sunday. (29MAR09) The first major film/TV project to be shot entirely on location in Botswana, 'The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency' is based on the best-selling novels by Alexander McCall Smith and co-written and executive produced by Richard Curtis and the late Anthony Minghella. Like McCall's novels, the series chronicles the adventures of Precious Ramotswe (Jill Scott), the cheerful, eminently sensible proprietor of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, located in the Kgale Hill Shopping Center on the outskirts of Gaborone.

On my third attempt I made it and I liked it, granted the acting was WAAAAAAY over the top I think I can get used to it. And Jill Scott is a hot FAT woman

Oh well.

I think the pacing will probably pick up, or I hope, anyway. If it does, maybe it can fill the people-in-colorful-clothing-solving-mysteries hole left in my heart by Pushing Daisies.

It doesn't have the feel of the kind of drama I like from my HBO shows, but that could pick up. Maybe because she has to get experience as a detective? It made me want to go to Botswana too!

I love its quirkiness and over the top characters mixed with the beautiful and unique Botswana culture and I loved that it's actually filmed in Africa. In the beginning when they show the little girl from behind I said "Ha, that little girl looks like a little version of Jill Scott" not knowing it was supposed to be her when she was little, until the voiceover started. The person I was watching with didn't know Jill Scott, but as soon as she saw her she said, "Yeah, heh, that girl did look just like her". It's odd the main characters are played by American actors - it works but it's the same as if they cast say Justin Timberlake (music star like Scott) and Zac Efron (musical star like Rose) to play the leads of a show set in Scotland and had them talking with thick Scottish accents. My two favorite moments - When the woman came in to discuss her husband's possible infidelity with Precious and Precious made her secretary stay out of the room, the secretary shouting "Adulterer!" after the woman said something had me cracking up. The very end, the sign, something like "The No. 1 Big Fat Husband Stealing Detective Agency". Funniest part of the whole show! We were cracking up for like 5 minutes over that cause it was so unexpected. I still laugh thinking about it. Can't wait for episode 2.
