I still think that this season is much better than last season. It's just a matter of preference, but in just comparing all the seasons this far, S4 ranks at the bottom overall for me.

Whoops, I meant Pono earlier.

I could not see Evan for the clothes last night. He was the opposite of the infamous Emperor of fairy tale fame. I really really really hope Melissa and Ade get a faster routine (and somebody buzzes Ade's hair in the middle of the night so he can lose the worst prop). Their routine last night was somnambulent, which was the theme, yes, but also a bit unfortunate since all of their dances, which I have liked, have been slow and dreamy. If they don't pick up the pace, it is going to be bad for them. They need something where they can really pop. |

This week's performances were shockingly bland. The best of this week, I felt were just good but not exceptional.
Good 1. Evan/Randi - I was not entirely sold on this performance at first. The focus is the butt? But I actually grew to like it. I actually thought Evan was really very good and got it down perfectly while Randi just managed to get enough of Mia's style to get through it. 2. Brandon/Janette - Both did great with this routine but Brandon in particular was shockingly good. The only reason this routine is not number 1 is because of the choreography, which I did not particularly love. I felt Brandon made it a lot better than it could have been. He was amazing with hip hop. I still can't believe how a contemporary dancer like him has moves like that. 3. Ade/Melissa - I regard the top four routines at about the same level really. Melissa in particualr carried this because her movement and physique just flowed from start to finish. Amazing. Ade did well too but I still do not see what the judges see in him at all. He does not have any personality to speak of. He's a vacuum. He's lucky he got someone like Melissa to emote the feeling of each routine with such strength. He would not be there right now if not for her. Of everyone, besides Kayla perhaps, I think she does the best job of showing the feeling of what she is dancing. 4. Kupono/Kayla - The waltz was not showy but it was amazingly graceful and beautiful and I credit most of it to Kayla, who was absolutely amazing and carried this all the way. The reason this is at four is Kupono who quite frankly was merely okay. He didn't fall down and carried his end just enough but it's obvious he's not a ballroom dancer. He had no feeling as opposed to Kayla who I felt had to struggle a little to get him to her level. Bad bad bad 5. Phillip/Jeanine - Sorry. It sucked. It was another lame routine by that drama queen Tyce. Didn't he sink Vitolio and Asuka the first week too? Ugh. But honestly, Phillip and Jeanine didn't do anything that made it more than it was, which was simply step step step, and I could say that about all four in this category. No feeling. Following steps. Boring. And just plain bad. On the plus side, Jeannine was slightly better than Phillip. He really needs to keep working on the other styles if he does not want the judges to start hating him. They have been very easy on him so far. 6. Jason/Caitlin - Paso doble... O Fortuna... How is it with those two things, this routine came out so tepid and unconvincing? Jason did okay but he wasn't giving it his all as demanded for this particular style and as usual Caitlin was just merely going through the motions. Step step step. Ugh. Not good at all. 7. Vitolio/Asuka - Okay. At this point I have to say Vitolio and Asuka are blatantly favored by the judges because I could not see what the hell they were raving about. It was terrible. It was almost as bad as Jonathan and Karla and I feel that really both are tied for the worst performance. I thought they were technically slightly better than what Jonthan and Karla did but still, it was boring as fuck. The movements were slow and tedious. No emotion. Nothing at all. Just plain bad. 8. Jonathan/Karla - The problem with these two are that they are so dull that only an amazing choreographer can make them amazing, like they were last week. Now that they got stuck with this horrid bland soft watered down "hip-hop", they sucked just as badly as they did in the first week. They are just cannon fodder at this point. No reason to keep either of them even though I think Vitolio and Asuka have not shown anything more than they have. V and A are simply are favored more by the judges and that's too bad for Jonathan and Karla. |

It is really interesting to me that this show has done such a good job of convincing people that contemporary dancers do not know shit about hip hop. Almost ALL of the contemporary dancers I know have AT LEAST taken hip hop classes. Most dance HH as well as Contempo and often Jazz. PArt of the reason contemp dancers do so well on this show is that they most often study outside their genre. I would be willing to put money down that Brandon has studied Hip Hop, likely for quite some time. |

Yeah, Brandon must have done at least some hip hop before. You don't learn to pop/lock or whatever like that in a week, I thought he was great. |
