What happens to septic tanks when you get a city water hookup? |

Well?
Do they just realize that they aren't needed anymore and quietly leave the yard in the night, or do you have to hire someone to dig them up? Can they be left alone and ignored? I need answers, people! |

I lived in an apartment that used to have one - the way those of us who lived there found out there used to be one, was that one of the guys almost fell into
it in the middle of the night when he was taking out the garbage
and there was one in a backyard at the place we first rented in Houston - the people had boarded it up and put grass over it - it collapsed one day - it was full of snakes |

My nan used to have a cistern. But after she got hooked up with city water, we kids were never allowed to cavort near or above it, for fear of cave-in. |

connection costs/tapping-in to the sewer. As of now, we're hearing $5-$10k. *shudder*

You can see a slight depression where ours was many years ago before city sewer came out. The neighbours said that you have to fill them in or take them out
and fill them in, just like Penny said.

Well Aunt Pappy 5-10K is bad but I think my aunt had to pay something like 30-40K when she had to get a new septic tank and field at our old house.

We pump our sewage into the Atlantic. Not bad for a town of a few hundred. Don't need no stinkin' waste treatment expenses when the Atlantic Ocean is
at your door.

I like the idea of removing it from the yard when the pipes are hooked up, but I'll wait and see how much money I'm gonna have by then. Not sure what
hookup is going to cost, not that there's any real hurry since the main line for this part of town hasn't been put down yet.
