I have tons of irrational love for FF8, so I'm d e v a s t a t e d to see its early massacre here.

57. Vincent (Final Fantasy VII)
Vincent is kinda cool, but he never really clicked with me. He's an optional character so he does get overlooked at some points in FF7, but he has his own story, too. I always found it to be really complicated though and I'm still not sure if I understand it... He worked for Shinra or something and then they killed him, but he didn't die... or something like that. So he's like a zombie? I really got confused. Overall, he's a little emotionally distant which is not my favorite kind of character and I don't like his limit breaks at all. 56. Paine (Final Fantasy X-2)
I just got done saying I didn't really like the emotionally distant characters... and here's Paine! She was supposed to add some coolness points to the very girly FFX-2 and she did because she is a badass bitch sorta... But she's almost too transparent in that department. It's like Square said to themselves "We need to make a badass bitch character to boost the coolness of FFX-2!" I guess Paine is ok. I don't remember anything of her story... if she even had one... I just never clicked with her so I feel indifferent I guess. 55. Zidane (Final Fantasy IX)
I think Zidane is terrible as a protagonist. He's soooooooooo boring. You hardly even get to know anything about him until very late in the game. Not only that, but his look is so "basic hero" and it's like they just slapped a monkey tail on him to make people say "why does he have a monkey tail?" When you do finally figure out Zidane's story, you realize that he's basically a copy of previous Final Fantasy heroes (mostly Cloud and Cecil). If I have one MAJOR complaint about FF9, it's that it was hardly original in any way and Zidane is probably the biggest example of this. He does get some points with me though for his personality. He's a nice enough guy and very supportive of the other characters in the game. That's not enough for me to give him a good ranking on the list though. 54. Edge (Final Fantasy IV)
Edge is a ninja prince. That sounds cool... but it's not really. He's a very one-dimensional character and he joins your party so late in the game that I really didn't care about him. I had already established love for all of the others and Edge wasn't winning me over. He also develops a thing for Rydia which is kinda annoying and Rydia's like "LOL get away from me." Edge is pretty decent in battle though cuz he incorporates ninja skills and all that. He's just ok in my book... There's really nothing about him that stands out. 53. Umaro (Final Fantasy VI)
If a character from FF3/6 has to be eliminated first, I would prefer it to be Umaro. I actually really like Umaro just cuz. He's a snow yeti/big foot monster that joins your team because Mog convinces him it will be fun. He's a completely optional character and he doesn't add anything to the story nor does he have a story of his own... but using him in battle is kinda fun. He's very strong and you can somewhat control what he does by equipping certain relics on him. I rank him above the others just because he's cute and he was a part of the epicness that is Final Fantasy 3/6.

Hm, I have to say, I'm not feeling the FFVIII slaughter since I've always liked FFVIII over the vastly overrated FFVII. That and well, Cloud's just
such a douche. Edge and Umaro were awesome though, lol.

52. Tidus (Final Fantasy X)
Never really noticed how asian Tidus looked while playing FFX, but apparently he was. Anyways, Tidus as a protagonist was also pretty sucky, but he does have that bit of mystery about him throughout basically the whole game so at least he's got a story. Who is he!?!? Where did he come from!?!? Why'd he get trapped in this other new world!??! Well, you eventually find the answers, but they're disappointing in my opinion. His personality is alright. He's a nice guy that's brave and all that jazz... That really doesn't make him very original. In fact, I found him to be very similar to Zidane which was not a good thing for him. Battle-wise, Tidus is middle of the road so once again he doesn't stand out... Too bad. 51. Banon (Final Fantasy VI)
Soooooooooooooooo much missed potential with Banon. He's only a playable character for about 10 minutes of the game and during that 10 minutes, if you weren't using his "health" command every turn then you weren't using him correctly. He was the leader of the Returners rebellion against the empire and he actually had a discernible personality, so I don't understand why they didn't make him a permanent character! He so easily could have been! I always liked Banon because he was a little cunty when trying to pressure Terra into joining the Returners and it's funny when you think about it. Fun Fact: ALWAYS refuse to join the Returners/tell Banon you need time to think about it and you'll get a Genji Glove after 3 times. Then when the world goes into ruin... he just disappears! You never see him again! WTF!?!? Did he die!?!? There's really no answer which is disappointing. 50. FuSoYa (Final Fantasy IV)
I'm pretty sure FuSoYa was just added to FF4 to make the endgame a little more fun. FuSoYa joins your party very late in the game and you don't even get to use him for very long, but for the short time that you do have him as a party member, you're pretty much unstoppable. He's a magic tank and kills everything! He actually does pull the story together at the end, too I'm not even gonna get into the details of that cuz it would take forever. Overall, he's ok in my book because he's kinda fun to kill bad guys with! :D 49. Cait Sith (Final Fantasy VII)
WTF @ Cait Sith! O_O Who thought up this thing?!? He's certainly an odd addition to FF7 let alone any game. I never really understood the concept behind him either. He's a robot controlled by Reeve at the Shinra headquarters... or something... and he's supposed to be a spy/traitor but has a change of heart and decides to help you out instead. Anyways, Cait Sith is probably the WORST addition to your party in battle. Yes, I have gotten the death jester or whatever the fuck it's called from Cait Sith's limit break at a point where it had been a long time since my last save and it PISSED ME OFF! I permanently benched him after that. However, I still kinda like him. He's a scrappy little dude and he really does care about his new-found friends. I can appreciate his randomness as well. 48. Tellah (Final Fantasy IV)
Oh Tellah... If you've ever heard an FF fan say "You spoony bard!" before, then you should know that Tellah is the one that uttered that line first! <3 He definitely had the spunky old man character down perfectly. However, there's an issue with Tellah. He's a temporary early-mid game character so he's not very good in battle. He does offer some decent magic to help you though. Most of his story is based on avenging his daughter's death and that's all I can tell you without supremely spoiling an intense emotional moment from FF4. But if you really really REALLY want to know... but don't read this spoiler if you have any plans of playing Final Fantasy 4 for the first time. |

I don't even remember Banon.
Cait Sith is FAR too low. Dice is the superior limit anyway. |

I'm glad Tidus is out. I was never a big fan of him.
Zidane is out way too early. He is one of my favorite FF protagonists. His relationship with Steiner is a bit Jim + Dwight-esque. I liked Banon a lot too, but I agree, he can't be ranked too high. So much missed potential with him, though his Health thing was amazing. |
