Lacolle, Quebec; Rouses Point, NY; or Plattsburgh NY?
I'd make my stopover in plattsburgh if possible, goose. at least there's some civilization/things to see there. it's a strip-mall type of town. it's a shame you're not going through vermont because burlington is much prettier the entire area between montreal and the border is a wasteland |

oh my. you'll most like being going by my house pretty much.
If you follow the erie canal it might not be so bad, and good luck finding a place to camp between Albany & Syracuse. plattsburg is a little college town, lake placid is beautiful as is the rest of the Adirondacks. Do you have a little route mapped out that you could post? a lot of people her could give you a better idea if we knew your route. |

I live off of Route 9 just north of Albany...thanks for the heads-up, I'll try not to run over anyone on bikes in the month of May...

lilmzcan wrote: Well, I checked a map but didn't look at particular numbers. I think I may have tendency to assume distances are longer because I live in Western Canada where nothing is close to anything else. That being said, it looks like it's about 8 miles between Lacolle and Rouses Point, and considering there's an international border I need to cross, it could still take a while on a bike. |

Bump... Grew up in Albany, NY... if you are taking the canal trail to Syracuse, it is quite historic and lovely. Also, Albany is not nearly as ghetto as people
are saying... there is one ghetto neighborhood and the rest is literally old, retired, Italian immigrant couples, and the route you're taking you
won't even see any ghettoness. Actually, the bike trail is way north of Albany proper so you will not see downtown (which is a weird, unique mix of
beautiful art deco buildings and strange, almost Stalinist 60s architecture.)

The brutal 60's architecture is the best reason to go to Albany.
It's like they cut a hole in the downtown area and built a gigantic monument to centralized government in the middle of a congenial backwater city. I love modern architecture like this both aesthetically and for the anger which it causes among not only traditionalists, but also critics and architects within its own ranks. I especially like The Egg. I have never been to a show there where the performer has not negatively commented on the building while in the meantime allowing their snobbery or ignorance blind them to the fact that they are playing in one of the most acoustically perfect theaters in the world. |

Every other year, my husband does the NYC bike tour which is held on the first week of May. I can't remember ever having a nice weekend.
Be prepared to freeze your ass off and lots of rain, rain, rain. There has to be dozens of places that are better for a bike tour in May than NY state. |

Baby Please wrote: The route as of now is Montreal - Albany on Route 9, Albany to Syracuse on Route 5, and then Syracuse to Ottawa by following Lake Ontario (I don't know the route # offhand). |

It was all about convenience, but now you've got me worried about rain. I did, however, buy a pretty sweet rain poncho yesterday :) |

Route 5 there are a lot of little motels, I can't recall any camping sites though. but hey, there are ton's of famers fields where you can pitch a
tent. err, actually scratch that, you may get shot that way. OH and you'll go by the Casino!
and try and see if you can go the canal route for a while, it will connect to route 5 in a bunch of places and it's a lot better than the regular ole roadway.. |

ugh.. apartment shopping in Ottawa.. been there.
one day there convinced us to stay here. it's so corporate and stuffy! one apartment building even billed itself as a crime-free building because they even checked the criminal records of applicants. wtf, talk about an invasion of privacy. |

i guess you want the shortest way possible, in that case yeah take the 221

Hey ag, do you think 221 is relatively safe for cyclists? I'm assuming that 15 would be crazy dangerous.
