Cry Baby by Janis Joplin
The hair's been a bit straightened-pointied-colored for the week. (She went to Adam's hairstylist.) Slash wants her "to get past the fear part." She's got the Joplin style, and the vocal twang sort-of matches, but at the expense of the pitch in the first line which coincidentally is in her lower register. But quickly she builds toward the title line. Powerful, although it's not gonna knock the roof off the building or anything. Second verse, she puts some personality into it, and again as the title line approaches I'm rockin' with anticipation. And again, it's strong and powerful. Good, if not quite her best of the season.
A 7.
Randy: Check it. You can sing your face off. You can sing anything. I didn't love the song choice for you. All it was, was the "Cry baby cry baby" at the top of your range. I didn't love it.
Kara: Janis, right choice. Bluesy rock. "Piece of My Heart" maybe. You nervous tonight?
Allison (more or less said yes)
Kara: I think you transform when you go on that stage. You become larger than life. I see your personality in your performances, and I want to give you that prop.
Paula: You're fearless. If they ever do a biopic on Janis, you've got the role.
Simon: The difference between where you started and where you are tonight, staggering. Terrific vocal. Only criticism is not trying to be more original. It was, compliment, sound-alike. I would have chosen a Queen song.
