Gokey got a medley of songs with Lionel Richie and Adam got a medley of songs with Kiss. Kris got a single song with Keith Urban, just like Alison got with Cyndi Lauper and Lil got with Queen Latifah. We always knew that TPTB planned on the Gokey/Lambert Finale, but to have planned out the Finale without waiting to see what actually happened vote-wise was pretty fucked up and it kinda bit them in the ass, since The-Little-Allen-That-Could took their prize after all. What I would love to see happen now is for A) Kris to actually succeed and sell fan-freaking-tastic amounts of CDs, B) The stupid ass judges quit proclaiming the winner/Top Two finalists before the show has even run its course, and C) Simon admit that he's actually a huge tool.

He is of the James Taylor/Lightfoot/Cat Stevens genre. But, for this style, he is actually quite good, more soulful than most. And he was humble, and never seemed to get pissed at the complete lack of pimpage he got over many other contestants. Last night I expected him to flip off the judges when they gave their final comments, which were borderline condescending. I have absolutely no problem with the win. I'm just wondering what the hell the content of his first album will be. I recall !$%%'s first album and it was almost unlistenable, and pray they don't pigeon-hole Kris into one stupid song type. The producers have a damn hard time ahead of themselves, figuring out how to market Kris's talent (which, I admit, he has quite a bit of) to appeal not only to the knee-jerk people who by every album by every winner, and not to the 'tweens who moon over his shy smile and cute eyes. So who is his demographic? What radio stations will play his stuff? Look - this isn't a knock on him - maybe the college venue route is the way to go. Adam lost with class and dignity, as I fully expected him to do. Good season, overall.

Kris is going to have to work very hard, and have some luck, to get any kind of career out of this. He's too low key to sell the kind of pop schlock they're going to stick him with, and too easygoing to fight against having a hack producer and a bad CD until it's too late. When I saw him onstage tonight I kept thinking of Joey from Friends. If Adam can figure out a vocal style that translates well to CD (which many finalists have NOT done: Reuben, Katherine, Blake), he will outsell Kris easily. And if anyone is smart enough to sign Allison and find some good songs for her, she could outsell both of them. Like Taylor, Kris could wind up with the 3rd best selling CD of his season.
