190. Dan Kay (Survivor: Gabon - 11th Place) Going into the game, I really thought that Dan stood a good chance of winning. I mean, he was obviously a strong player, and he was the oldest of the "young" players, which made him a good link between young and old. Plus, he's a lawyer, so I figured he'd be smart about strategy too. And he also seemed to fill out the triple threat status easily with a rather sensative persona that he displayed in his early videos. And then he got sent to Exile Island where, while funny to watch, he still looked like a complete idiot when he was completely unable to find the first clue, even, to the hidden immunity idol. He was just too nice for the game, it seemed, as more cutthroat strategists played circles around him. He was only inevitably booted when his tribe had a double boot just before the merge, and his challenge strength was no longer useful. So while Dan was kinda boring (and funny in the fact that he ate so damn much), he was a sweet guy that it was hard not to root for.
189. Earl Cole (Survivor: Fiji - 1st Place) I like Earl. I do. As a winner, he certainly was one of the better options Fiji had. But he was just such an obvious winner for someone who was about the same level of cold calculation that Yul had, with only a slight increase in personality. It made for a boring season, seeing how everyone basically stepped aside so that Yau and Earl could make it to the end of the game, and then Earl basically had Yau's elimination hadned to him on a silver platter one round before the final tribal council. Still, Earl was a very nice guy and he had a very nice alliance with other equally nice people. He just wasn't all that interesting. I will give him a ton of credit though, for being someone who had never seen Survivor, was called in as a replacement only a few days before the show started (sometime before Melissa quit) and yet he somehow managed to coast through the entire game with only a single vote (and it was a throwaway vote at that) cast against him before winning a unanimous 9-0-0 jury vote (the first in the show's history). That's pretty impressive.
188. Stephenie LaGrossa (Survivor: Guatemala - 2nd Place) To this day, the logic behind bringing back Stephenie and Bobby Jon for a second chance only one season after Ulong became the worst tribe in Survivor history absolutely baffles me. I mean, knowing that they could most likely have a second All-Stars season, why ruin an easy candidate for female casting in that season by using up of one of the best female characters on some random season where she could easily be booted early out of spite? Anyway, Guatemala's one real fault was that, because of how loved Stephenie was in Palau, when she made the final two and lost almost unanimously, the editors basically had to turn the show into the Steph show just to explain how America's sweetheart fell so far from grace. As a result, you saw Steph bitching and moaning about how much her tribe sucked at challenges (which again, was because of tribes that were completely unbalanced if you removed Steph/BJ from the equation). Or the constant need for Stephenie to feast, as though she needed a virgin sacrifice in order to maintain her ever-present tan. Stephenie went from underdog sweetheart to horrid, self-entitled bitch in just a few moments (from what we saw). But still, without her, Guatemala might've been completely different and a much worse season than it was, so for that, Steph gets much love from me.
187. Gillian Larson (Survivor: Gabon - 17th Place) You've gotta love the superfans of Survivor who really have NO business being out there in the game whatsoever, because they're usually at least a little bit insane. Gillian was no exception. I mean, she was just adorable with her little glasses and her never-say-die attitude, plus the fact that she was never really THAT bad at the challenges, compared to some other people. She wanted to be out there so badly because Africa was like a home to her, having been born in South Africa. Living out in Gabon was the experience of a lifetime for her, and it was always so sweet to see just how much she wanted to be in the game. Even when she was pretty fucking crazy (not on the same level of batshit as the other old ladies we've seen, mind you), such as when she randomly wanted her tribe to experience the joys of seeing or perhaps even touching a chunk of elephant dung, she was still endearing. Sure, her upbeat attitude might've gotten annoying after a little while, but she brought positivity to a tribe that was filled with somewhat negative personalities (not that that's a bad thing). And for that, Gillian gets spot number 187.
186. Rudy Boesch (Survivor: All-Stars - 17th Place) It's almost sad to have to rank Rudy here, because he's mainly down this low for All-Stars because of how early he went out and because of how he wasn't able to contribute to the season the way he did in Borneo. In All-Stars, Rudy broke his own record by being the oldest player in the history of the show, and then he injured himself in episode 2, saving Ethan and getting voted out early. His time in All-Stars was minor, and sure, he may have, like Rupert, sided with the girls instead of the winners, but I'm not gonna criticize him. Much like in Borneo, he formed an alliance with the fat, hard-working guy with a rather eccentric personality, and I think they were true friends and probably an alliance many fans wanted to see, as they were the two most popular Survivors at that point in time. Rupert couldn't bring himself to turn against his friend and ally, which probably spared him from Rudy's hit list, since upon his departure, Rudy made reference to his friends that could probably pull a Jimmy Hoffa on Jenna and Jerri. Since All-Stars, Rudy has also lost his wife, and that's always sad news because it's harder to lose someone you love when you're Rudy's age. |

I actually thought Dan was kind of cool. And Guatemala's cast could've stood on it's own with Steph/BJ, but them being there just added some good
moments too.
