well as a thanks for letting me know about Sophie's myspace page, let me do the update for Friday.
Friday's Idol of the day is the African continent's first ever idol, Heinz Winckler
He was SA's first ever Idol and he placed 3rd on World Idol just behind Kelly and Kurt. Being set in a country as culturally divided as South Africa, Heinz' road to victory was full of scandal, one of which was accusations of racism affecting the vote as many considered runner-up Brandon October to be superior to Heinz. In the end though, Heinz proved them all wrong to become a pretty successful recording artist scoring hit after hit along with a critically acclaimed second album, he was also picked to sing a song for the Disney movie "Treasure Planet". I finally found where you can see him in his Idol days, in the upcoming link is him performing his Idol coronation song "Once In A Lifeteime" which is really upbeat and catchy, which for the days of "A Moment Like This" and "Evergreen" was a bit of a rarity in the Idol world. http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?mkt=nl-nl&vid=1419a88b-0d43-4620-9f48-9a2a6a222d8a also, he toured the US and the world last year as part of the travelling company for...wait for it..... RENT. Here are a couple of his songs I found:

one of my favorite Heinz songs ever is "Undo" but I can't find it anywhere on youtube. His 2nd album is all sorts of awesome, it's very
reminiscent of Damien Leith. I'm also kinda fond of "Shut Up and Kiss Me" from his first album, which was more pop oriented and he seemed to be
marketed as a boyband of one at the time. He went all rock-lite Kelly Clarkson style for his 3rd album, his career pattern I've noticed quite mirrors
Kelly's save for a stint on Broadway with Rent. I beleive a fourth album is on its way.

for Saturday's update, we're going to the UK, the birthplace of Idol with their most recent (X Factor) winner, Alexandra Burke.
What I love about the X Factor format is that it really focuses on each contestant, forming a nice narrative for them. In Alexandra's case, she was there to prove something. You see 3 years prior, Alexandra made it all the way to the semi finals but was cut by then mentor Louis Walsh for her age and inexperience. now she's back to prove that she deserves to win the competition. The thing is, all the other girls that season are kinda awesome too. now I know most of you here are anti-divas, so you should know that Alexandra began her X Factor journey trying to be one. To which the judges started criticizing her for it. Simon Cowell pretty much said that she was getting predictable and was being overshadowed by the other females in the competition. She had the voice, but she was ultimately trying to be another Mariah/Whitney clone and it doesn't help that just earlier that year, former winner Leona Lewis broke records across the pond. Alexandra struggled trying to prove that she was a real artist. She and mentor Cheryl Cole decided to keep away from classic Whitney/Celine/Mariah ballads and started looking to modern pop for song choices. Her incredible voice combined with some epic dance choreography quickly made her stand out and by the middle of the competition she has surpassed Diana Vickers, her biggest rival, as the bookies' favorite to win. and win she did. I've already posted her breakout performance earlier which was Christina Aguilera's "Candyman" during Big Band week. Now here is her first audition as well as her winning moment with, wait for it.... "Hallelujah" as her single. |

Do you have Heinz's CDs sjc? If you do I would love if you'd share. I only have one song by him, "Soledad." |

I got an idea, whenever a new season of AI starts and the finals begin with their usual theme weeks, we can have an international idol interpretations of the
theme and then post videos of what their performances were when they had those themess. like for example this year we had a Michael Jackson week which has
already been done in other idol series so we can put up Natalie's Man In The Mirror, OZidol 6's and X Factor's performances from that week and so
on and so forth.

That will be fun. The hard part will be choosing just 12 for the international Idol faux season.

yeah I figured it would be so, I changed it. we could do a test run of the top 12 idea though this summer while we wait for OZIdol 7. Just imagine a top 12
with Damien Leith, Guy Sebastian, Theresa Sokyrka, Alexandra Burke, Jaclyn Victor, Elli Erl, Will Young, Sophie Paterson, Daniel Kublbock, Billy Klippert,
Shayne Ward, Monica Brodka.... it would be epic. the only rules would be they cannot have been on the same season and a maximum of three people per country

Part 1 of international Idols extravaganza:
Keith MacPherson & Nancy Silverman A double shot of ROBBED Idols. Keith and Nancy are easily the greatest contestants to never make the finals. They were both super fucking robbed in the Canadian Idol 4 semi finals. That season was an epic fail mostly because of this tragic event and CI4's only redeeming quality is that the winner, Eva Avila is a serious talent.
I could post their 3 performances a piece on CI4 but I'd rather post their original music. If you like their voices I highly recommend Youtubing their CI stuff. I'm especially partial to Nancy's "Could I Be Your Girl" which is 100% Nancy to the core and Keith's "Collide." They were and are both phenomenal talents and I think CI4 was a seriously poor season without them. They easily should have made the finals, and done well. Unfortunately Nancy was too polarizing and quite frankly Canada just fucked with Keith. Eva/Keith/Nancy would have been my dream Top 3, so epic. For Keith I'll post a song from his duo, Keith & Renee off their album Revolution, and for Nancy a video of her playing an original song "Another Trip Around The Sun:" |
