According to the ABC.com rundown of the finale it is Egyptian god dess Taweret.
Here is the Wikipedia article on her http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taweret Taweret became seen, very early in Egyptian history, as a deity of protection in pregnancy and childbirth

Some speculate that the problems started after the statue was destroyed. Or something else caused the problem (the incident perhaps?). There obviously
wasn't a problem in the 70s since Ethan was born on the island

PUSSYcow - This was discussed a long time ago but I think it was just confirmed. I thought for sure it was Sobek or however you spell it. It just fits better
than Tawaret.

Yeah I posted about this in the Grand Unifying Theories thread a while ago.
There was also confirmation on Taweret as a solution to a puzzle in the latest Wired magazine which was edited by JJ Abrams. |

but do we see the statue in '77? i cant remember for some reason....lol to much LOST on the brain!! |

As far as I know, we haven't seen the statue nor its remnants in '77 so we have no idea if it is still standing

Back to the statue: Personally I think if it was destroyed post '77 there would be a lot more debris around. But that might be something they just didn't think about. |

I read on some lost site that the rundown isn't official and thus not cannon.
There's no way it can be taweret, the face is of a crocodile, not a hippo. Not to mention the statue doesn't have other features which look like Taweret.. It's clearly a mans body. Isn't Sobek tied to fertility as well? |

According to what Ben told Sun, the statue was destroyed before he ever got to the island, but he also told her that he didn't expect her to believe him...
