I've been using the Weber Genesis gas grill for a few years, but I've kind of outgrown it. Let's dispense with the whole gas vs charcoal thing off the top. Would love to use charcoal but the grill is on a wood deck and I've run a propane line directly to it, so it's going to be gas. Plus, I have a much higher probability of blowing my house and myself up with gas, which is very appealing. I think the right grill is the Weber Summit series E-650. My problem is that it is a little wide for the space that I want to put the grill. So, I figure I can do without the 12,000 BTU side burner (there's a kitchen 25 feet away so no biggie). I called Weber to ask them if it can be assembled without the side burner and some dude in India told me < APU voice> We do not recommend any modifications or customizations. < /APV> Looking at the assembly instructions on line made me think it should be very doable: http://www.weber.com/manuals/pdf_files/2009_grills/Summit_ES620_ES650_AssemblyInstructions_90736_100108.pdf So, two questions: 1. Is the modification doable? 2. Is it the right grill or would you recommend something else?

Kitchen can stay cool on hot days and I can put my humungo stock pot on it for lobster, crabs, shrimp or mass amounts of boiled corn. It fits better than in the kitchen. And fuck you for the thread title.

I wouldn't do a modification because the regulator valve that moderates how much gas is sent to your grill is designed to accommodate that extra 12,000 BTU side burner. While I'm sure the modification is simple enough, removing that burner would affect the rest of the grill and the amount of gas that is pumped out to the other burners. I'm a little wary of screwing around with improperly installed gas valves and matches, especially when you'll be using it when booze is involved. Why don't you remove the prep area on the left side and keep the side burner or find one that's not as wide? PS: nice grill

While it may or may not affect the grille, I'm certain it would void the warranty- which may prove costly in the long run. While the house is only 25 feet away, having a side burner really has benefits. The problem with the left side thingy is that it houses the pop-up rotissorie (sp?) which seems like it would be a lot harder not to install than a simple side burner. Chances are I'll never use it, but whatever. I don't really have a problem voiding the warranty. And I'm talking Weber, not Viking or something really upscale and expensive. I prefer slightly less showy up here. It ain't Manhattan. As long as the modification works, I am probably just going to go for it.
