Mostly Asian kids go there because their parents make them study for the admissions test when they start 7th grade.My son made it but declined the invitation because it is a very stressful environment. Many suicides.

It's actually more prestigious to go there than any other private school in the city because of the percentage of students that gain admittance into the top 25 colleges/universities. It's essentially the Harvard of NYC high schools, with Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech completing the holy trinity, like Princeton and Yale. And quite frankly, the statement about only Asians going there is quite racist. Their Caucasian counterparts have parents that do just the same thing, except they also hire tutors and send them to Princeton Review so they perform better on the admissions tests. People are just pissed off that the preparation bias that effectively kept the top three public schools nearly lily white for so many decades is now defunct. ETA: By the way, I'm not saying you are racist. It just pisses me off sometimes when statements like that are made because it further cements the idea in my mind that minorities can never win in this country. Either were too stupid to get into a school on our own merit and need extracurriculars like sports or were too scholastically obsessed. He believes he's this socialite thats in the Fashion Industry but clearly not if he has times to rate B list shows and post about them. I think he lives more in his head than in the actual world. Thanks. I went to prep school then on to an Ivy League school. Actually, my sister went to Brooklyn Tech. And I never said that those high schools are lily white now, but they were for most of their history. There have always been complaints about the entrance exam only now it's about how Asians study too hard for it. I apologize if I failed to articulate how difficult it is to be a minority in a competitive academic environment because it always seems like you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Oh and I'm not in the fashion industry or a socialite. Though I am a native New Yorker.

All of it subtly implying that the most well rounded students are white. I am far from racist. I made this statement about Asians kids because Stuy is 60% Asian (mostly Chinese). I know a Chinese 14 year who took the test this year. His parents sent him to summer school for three years to study for the admissions test. He took the test and got a score of 680 (a 640 got you into Stuy). The kid made Stuy but was upset because he didn't pull a 700, which by the way is the elite of the elite. They are in special HIGH HONOR classes. My son got into Stuy without a day of study. I always believed that it should be a natural ability not a learned one that got you into these schools. The stress level is so high because so many of these kids do not belong in these school. The suicide rate is very high for kids who go to Stuy. I know two kids who had nervous breakdowns from this school. And one or two kids make Harvard most of them go to SUNY or CUNY schools.

I got in there - but my parents didn't like the idea of me traveling from Queens everyday. I hated them for stunting my education. I didn't watch the episode but the girl who goes there better not be ashamed of it - it's a great school.

I read it correctly. There is a huge assumption that "naturally gifted" kids are able to handle these incredible demands and I am going to disagree. It is stating "hey, unless it comes natural to you - don't aim for the stars. They're too much of a longshot - not happening in this lifetime" These so-called "suicides" were classified to only those that smarts didn't come naturally. Where are these statistics? The point is, to the "naturally gifted", the demands really aren't so incredible. It's like if you have a kid who is an incredibly gifted athlete, it may not be out of the realm of reason that he/she could swim the English Channel or climb Mount Everest. If you have a kid who isn't a natural athlete, they are going to have to work unbelievably hard to condition themselves to be able to accomplish something like that. It would certainly be harder on them than on the naturally gifted athlete. If you have a kid with asthma and scoliosis, though, no matter HOW much conditioning they do, it is just too damned dangerous for them to attempt something like that... It's not worth the risk.

Hyper intelligence does not mean you're immune to stress or suicidal thoughts. It's like thinking only dumb people suffer nervous breakdowns. My experience has always been that the most motivated student usually does better, regardless of natural ability or not. The entrance exam is more a reflection of preparation than actual intelligence. Your high school performance/achievement will not mimic your score. You'll most likely do well if your grammar and middle school education were superb, otherwise you need to study harder to make up the difference- especially if English is not your first language. How this is suddenly seen as a bad thing when rich people, regardless of race, do the same for their offspring with tutors and special programs is beyond me. And pamrose, I never said you were a racist. But I was ticked off that you felt the need to include that the school's makeup is mostly Asian. I'm trying to figure out why you thought it was relevant to the discussion. Your explanation would've been fine without that mention.
