I tried shaking a crush by being a jerk, forgetting birthdays, loosing phone numbers, etc., but it only incited more cards, gag gifts to make me remember that
shit, and increased number of phone calls. Then I told her to get a life and that she brought nothing to the friendship. She's never spoken to me again.

Just tell him/her early on that you're simply not interested in a relationship. You don't have to be cruel, but you can still get your point across and
the person will move on and forget all about you.

One of my stalkers made the comment a few weeks ago that she hoped someday to marry me. I told her basically we were very different people and that it would
never work out.

What exactly makes you so sure this person has a crush on you? Have they done anything specific, or is it just a feeling on your part? Because the situation
completely depends on that.
If they've done nothing specific but you kind of just get the sense, it's ok to just pretend to be oblivious and go on being friends. Also, if this is the case, then they probably value you enough as a friend to not make the first move and risk rejection and subsequent loss of acquaintanceship - good news for you. If they've made overt and unmistakable advances, then yeah, you pretty much need to have a conversation about it the next time they do so. It doesn't have to be a long drawn out explanation, just say something impersonal like how you're really not looking for a relationship right now and maybe throw in some plausible sounding reasons why. If they don't want to be your friend after that, then they had no interest in being just friends anyway and you were bound to stop talking sooner or later. |
