"Lover" went out in the late 80s. It implies the relationship is primarily based on sex. You introduce someone as your "lover" and people
instantly create a mental image. It's fucking rude, it's disrespectful to all involved, it's just plain LAME.
"Boyfriend" or "girlfriend" is acceptable when you are just dating and starting out. "Husband" or "wife" may be used as you desire. Whether or not your "marriage" is legal, if you feel in your heart that you are married, you can pronounce it as such. "Friend" or "roommate" is what you use in dubious or mixed company to get the message across without being obnoxious. Everyone knows what you are saying but they just nod and smile and then talk about you later behind your back. "My weekend fuck-hole" is OK to use if you're at one of those parties where everyone is wearing leather and there's a nearby sling and a tub of Crisco. "Partner" is MY personal choice. It reflects equality between the two. It signifies a mutual cooperation throughout life. It is dignified and mature. It signals that the relationship is about far more than sex. |

I just recently went through this. I told the guy respectfully that I wasn't interested in that right then. Three weeks later, he cursed me out and said I
had aids.
So yeah, it's probably best to just avoid them altogether. |
