Okay so I'm gonna rank my favorite albums. The only rule I set up for myself was that there could be no repeated artists, unless it's a Diana Ross with
and without the Supremes situation. Oh, and you've been warned: this list will be mostly made up of female artists.

Honorable Mention: Diamanda Galás Diamanda Galas is easily the technical 'best' singer of everyone on this list. Like I said, gurl can SAAANG. I haven't found a consensus on what her vocal range is, but if I remember correctly, it's at least three and a half octaves. Diamanda also throws in a bit of speaking in tongues into her performances. The only thing holding Diamanda back from having an album on this list is because her work tends to be a bit lopsided, IMO. If I could've cheated and made a playlist of ten songs by her, it would (without a doubt) be in the top 10. In the mean time, enjoy a few vids: And if anyone's interested, some of my top Diamanda songs are: Gloomy Sunday, Birds of Death, Abel et Cain, I Put a Spell on You, and Let My People Go (the first album writeup will be in the next post)

20. Alanis Morissette - Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie This is an album that, for me, is difficult to listen to because the bad outweighs the good. It's over an hour long, so it naturally feels a bit bloated. For me, enjoying this isn't a multi-task album at all... you need to pay close attention to enjoy it. On a positive note, there are some really kick-ass songs; Alanis's songwriting was at its peak here. She also used some very interesting, unconventional song structures. I love the title a lot as well. Oh, and fun fact: the text on the cover is some Buddhist precepts shit. Some MTV Unplugged performances of 'Junkie' songs:
My top songs from this album: Baba, I Was Hoping, Unsent, So Pure, Joining You Clues to next two albums: |

Diamanda!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMFG this bitch & Kate Bush are my absolute favorite female singers ever in the history of music <33333 Love that she's been banned by the Vatican and arrested several times in her life for standing up for her beliefs & convictions <33333333333333333333333333 When I read the spoiler last night she immediately came to mind because I love her and she's the only Greek G.oddess with awesome vocal talent I know, but ultimately assumed it'd end up being some American Idol skank or some other insignificant mainstream radio c.unt worshiped by the masses What do you mean about her work being lopsided??? Some of it is really out there and extreme, but there's also so much awesomeness in albums like Saint of the Pit, The Singer, & Plague Mass...The Sporting Life with Zepplin's John Paul Jones is perfection! All her theatrical AIDS related work was EPIC, like no other shit ever done before... Plague Mass is an actual "mass" ceremony at a real cathedral in NYC, covered in fake "blood"! one of the few live albums that make me wish I was there at the moment it was recorded, it's like a religious experience listening to it at full volume <333333333

I tend to categorize Diamanda's work in two; the live/jazz-influenced material (la serpenta canta, the singer, malediction and prayer, etc) and her
experimental work (plague mass, vena cava, schrei x). The second category, experimental, is very difficult for me to compare to other (more conventional) music
so I tend to avoid that. As for her more jazz-influenced work, I gravitate moreso towards particular songs than full albums. I have troubles listening to most
of her albums straight through, actually, because some of it doesn't quite hold my interest. But all in all, I think she's an amazing singer (it's
a shame she isn't more well-known) and from what I've seen in interviews, she's not lacking at all when it comes to personality. I'm praying
something lines up for me so that I could see her perform live.

19. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black Before I start writing about this album, let me just say it is way overrated. Sure it's great (especially compared to the music that gets as much commercial acclaim nowadays) but obviously I think there are at least 18 better albums than it. Stylistically, I have a sort of love/hate relationship with this album because (to me) it feels like one continuous song. Consistency is always a good thing, but as many times as I've listened to BTB I still have trouble remembering all the songs, the order, etc. I love that Amy took it upon herself to sort of reference a lot of past styles, and I think she did a great job of reintroducing them to the public. As much as I love confessional-style songwriting, BTB tends to feel a bit melodramatic. I think Amy definitely shows off her interesting vocal chops here, and I'm very interested to see what she does next (if there is a 'next'). Favorite songs: Back to Black, You Know I'm No Good, Just Friends, Some Unholy War Enjoy: 18. Regina Spektor - Soviet Kitsch This is an album I feel like I've known since I was little. I will admit that several of her other albums are more interesting, quirky, and 'better,' but I feel a strange emotional attachment to Kitsch. This is the album where I think Regina really nailed it as far as matching production with her generally acoustic, lo-fi style. Some of her previous albums, although great, sound like they were recorded in someone's bedroom. Kitsch retains what makes Regina Regina while sounding like a finished product. Not to mention the songs are consistently awesome (which makes it my personal fave; some of her other albums can be a tad bit hit-or-miss). Although it's a full-length CD, time seems to pass by much more quickly when I listen to Kitsch. The lyrics are very good as well, probably some of Regina's best. The cover is my personal favorite of hers. Favorite songs: Poor Little Rich Boy, The Flowers, Us, Chemo Limo, Somedays And some live performances:

20. Alanis Morissette - Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie I remember rushing out to get this CD the day it was released and being pretty disappointed upon the first listen. But after you listen to it alot you appreciate it. I think its a great album, but people were expecting Jagged Little Pill pt. 2. It just wasn't happening. I hate some of the songs towards the end, I think overall the album is too long but it deserves more respect than its gotten, imo. |
