When did your kid learn to tie their shoes? |

Because I'm reading that it's not uncommon for eight or ten year olds to not know how to tie their shoes. WTF is with that?

Both of mine learned before they started school. So before they were 5.
Back then they had those shitty velcro kid shoes. I blame velcro for the fall of todays youth. |

Just buy your pesky kids loafers.

I learned just in time to start first grade. So I'm only half-retarded, as I see it.

I could read at 4 picking the horsies with my dad in Scotland and was a Senior in college at 19 but couldn't tie my shoes until I was 11.
I did the double loop thing until I was like 15 then I finally got the normal tie. I think it isnt brains as much as common sense of which - as many posters would agree - I am somewhat lacking. |

One of my foster kiddos was 7 and he didn't know how to tie shoes. He had always had the velcro kind.
I got him shoes with laces for his birthday and taught him how to tie them - it only took him a couple of tries before he got it. |

My boy learned when he was 5. It was fun teaching him because we had this little Bantam book or some such that had all kinds of fasteners all over it and
inside it.
Never went the velcro route because I didn't want him to struggle with the inevitable Chuck Taylor's later in life. |

I did the double loop thing too, but I thought that I had invented it. |

Daughter before Kindergarten, son in Kindergarten. All credit goes to my wife, I would have kept them in velcro a lot longer.

i learned in kindergarten. There were a bunch of 'must do's' before we could graduate to grade 1.
Tying shoes, knowing the alphabet, and counting to 30 were all on the list. I never did the two-loop thing. We were taught to make a loop, do a wrap around, and pull through. |
