I earned a BA in the 90s at a university and now I'm going to a community college for an AA degree in art. People in their late teens will most likely want to go to a university--if their families can afford it--because of the social scene, the chance to meet new friends, and the opportunity to drink massive amounts of alcohol. From I remember, most people spent more time planning and recovering from their partying activities than they did on the coursework. The population isn't very diverse. It's true, they'll try to get as many minorities and international kids on their roster as they can, but the community will basically be comprised of 90 percent middle class white ppl in their upper teens, early 20s. But that's the kind of social circle these folks are looking for anyway.

Community college is for:
people in the same age range who want to pursue higher education but their families can't afford a university
people in the same age range who haven't yet established their career goals and don't want to invest a lot of money yet or aren't impressed with the "prestige" so they can do without it for the first couple of years.
people who are going for a second degree or a career change
people who are taking classes for a hobby

Community College student bodies will have a wider range of ages, ethnicities, education background, and financial statuses. Some of the classmates will be in the field, so the potential for networking is good.
