Also, I don't think from a practical standpoint that we can recapture the olden days of Survivor. The viewership has skewed younger for the last 4 seasons, more emphasis is placed on gameplay rather than survival skills, and they're much more aware that they need to somehow keep viewers to keep the sponsors happy, hence the overpimping of polarizing characters (Randy, Coach, Russell H). Additionally, the ratings now (even though viewership has shifted, people have died, etc.) has dropped to a point where it wouldn't be worth it financially to do a lot of merchandising.

In that situation, editing the show more as a documentary isn't a big risk, After Survivor became a phenomenon it was added to CBS regular schedule. For the first few seasons, it wasn't a risk to continue to maintain a documentary style edit for Survivor since the ratings were so high. But after awhile, in order to compete with drama and crime shows, the network decided to alter the edit emphasis to rely more on action and drama and the show became less like a documentary/

I think that you are right about the shift in emphasis though, from a primarily character based show to an action based game show. That's why it sucks. It's like a really drawn out episode of "Fear Factor" now.
