Look, the HII is supposed to introduce an additional element of randomness in the game. Challenges do the exact same thing. So do initial tribe selection (whether it's done by the players or the producers) and tribe switches. They all force players to adapt to circumstances and change their strategies in response to events. And the reason for all of that? TO MAKE THE SHOW MORE FUN TO WATCH! But that's not why the HII continues to exist. Like I said, one of three things consistently happen in the presense of a HII, and we have seen every possible combination. The producers are concerned with the bottom line, as they should be, but they are catering not to what the larger audience actually wants, but to a vocal minority. Sucksters are defeatist and like to think that we're the minority, but we aren't necessarily any smaller than the people who vote in polls or award 100K every season to the biggest dumbass(Exaggeration). I have yet to see any real proof that the people who love Rupert Boneham or swallows the editing no questions asked are the majority of viewers. I think that the reason the Idol continues to exist in its current state with so many stipulations is because it gives the producers much more discretion and indirect influence on who wins. They want a nice, inoffesnsive winner every season with the bare minimum of originality. Nothing against the people who have won recently, because I liked all of them, but the actual structure of the show itself I hated.

Twists are designed to enhance player reactions within the environment, not replace them. Tell a random person that someone on Survivor found the Idol, and watch them yawn.
