The tour kicked off in Kalgoorlie then travelled to Bunbury, Coffs Harbour, Dubbo, Canberra, Wollongong, Newcastle, Wagga Wagga, Launceston, Hobart, Darwin, Rockhampton, Brisbane, Perth, Mildura, Adelaide, Melbourne and ended in Sydney. 2007 heralds the return of the controversial Ian "Dicko" Dickson to the judging chair. The judging panel sees Dicko join his former alumni; Marcia Hines, Mark Holden and Kyle Sandilands. We will have to wait and see when and if sparks fly, who in fact is the new "Mr (or is it Mrs) Nasty" and how the new seating arrangements work out. Andrew G and James Mathison, the show's hosts for the fifth year, will guide us through the Idol journey, which kicks off with six audition episodes featuring the good, the bad, the delusional and the spine-tingling. Approximately 35,000 hopefuls from around the nation turned up to be a part of the 2007 Australian Idol auditions. The four judges had the daunting task of whittling down the thousands of Australian Idol auditionees to a top 100 - the talent was so good this year that the judges discovered 136 performers they wanted to see more of in Sydney. The "Top 136" episode will air on Sunday, August 19. Through this part of the competition, the top 136 will be culled down to a top 24 semi-finalist announcement on Monday, August 20. The following week is the semi-final week, with live shows on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Two contestants each night will make it through by viewer votes. For the contestants who don't make it through (this includes anyone in the top 136), their Australian Idol journey won't necessarily be over. Lucky semi finalists will be given a second bite of the cherry to become an Idol finalist by performing in the Wild Card show. A number of contestants will make it through this round, culminating in the reveal of the final 12 on Monday, September 3. Australian Idol has a new home in a purpose built studio in Sydney at Fox Studios Australia. The new look finals set will be revealed to Australia in September. A bigger live audience than ever will see each live performance show on Sunday nights and the results show on Monday nights. Another world first for Australian Idol was allowing contestants to sing their original compositions from the hugely successful Up Close and Personal show. Watch out, this year it's going to be bigger and better. John Foreman returns as musical director and Erana Clark as vocal coach. Under their watchful eye, the final 12 will get a chance to perform an array of musical genres and the Australian viewers will get the chance to vote (phone and SMS) for their favourite Idol. Week by week, the number of performers will be reduced until the Australian public is presented with two finalists who will perform live in the grand final at the Sydney Opera House competing for the coveted title of being the next Australian Idol. * Australian Idol (series five) will premiere on Network Ten over two huge nights Sunday, August 5 and Monday, August 6 2007.

As for Damien's CD I'm so excited too, I'm totally ordering it asap. I'll check Waterfront Records' website frequently to see when it gets listed and let anyone who is interested in ordering it know if it's a good deal.

And characters they are - audiences might see some familiar faces who used to be in well-known bands, the son of Elvis' piano player, and a guy one of the judges calls "the slob from Perth." That's the promise from two of the judges, who said audiences this year would see the highest calibre of performers - even if it's not from Brisbane, whose talent this year was described as "pretty average". Hard-ass judge Kyle Sandilands said Idol was used to finding a large number of talented performers in Brisbane - but this year, the quantity was not there and the talent was "a bit lacking". "We did take some good quality people out of there, and that's all that matters at the pointy end of the show - that we've got the best people," Sandilands said. "Usually Brisbane is full of guitar-playing, beautiful singers, but this time they were all pretty average - there is definitely still quality lurking out there, though." Fellow judge Mark Holden credited Brisbane boy Bobby Flynn, a contestant on last year's series of Idol, for the emergence of different and unique talent. "We've got some fabulous young 16-year-old girls and guys who have been waiting for Idol and counting down the days until they were old enough," Holden said. "But on the other hand we've got 30-somethings who in years gone by might've tried the traditional routes, or been in a band that didn't work." Despite their age, the younger performers aren't typical popettes who were only seeking fame and glamour, he said. "I think this year you'll find that the young 16-year-old girls in particular are really highly evolved - they're piano-playing and song-writing. "And on the other hand we've got the strongest group of men - rock guys that are in their late 20s that have been around, and they're super strong." Sandilands said some of the performers to audition this year included former members of successful Australian bands that viewers were likely to recognise. "Elvis Presley's piano player's son, who's sort of a mid 30s weird looking muso, he auditioned - he would never have shown up a few years back. "There's a girl we saw at the audition who has even been in the top ten of the original Pop Idol in the UK, and she's been living here for a few years." He said the judges were happy with the final 24 performers, and couldn't think of a single person who they would like to see gone. "Mark's the big whinger on the judging panel, but he's really happy with every single one. "But hopefully there are still a few train wrecks, because I don't want to be sitting there just smiling and clapping (every week)."

Jessica Garlick Laura Doherty Rosie Ribbons Hayley Evetts Zoë Birkett According to Wikipedia: Rosie was born in Australia so it could be her. Jessica and Zoe seem to be busy doing other things. Hayley is supposed to be going on the X Factor. I can't find much on Laura. Looks like it's probably Rosie. I watched the original Pop Idol but I don't remember Rosie, I only remember Will, Gareth, Darius, Zoe, Aaron and a I remember a little about Hayley and Jessica.

I normally hate all the audition shows and just like when it gets to the round with everyone who gets the Golden ticket (or whatever they give in Australia) and go to Sydney. That's not until August 19th. And I saw the rest of the schedule...this semi-final schedule is nuts. The first week it's on FIVE NIGHTS in a row. Two contestants go through each night? Would that be 8 contestants since on that first night (Sunday) they have to perform so people can vote for a reveal on Monday? That leaves 4 for the wildcard for a top 12. She was absolutely incredible, and brought a tear to my eye. What talent I liked John also, he's a rocker but he's pretty unique. He has an odd sounding voice.

The guy went on BBOZ7 and was a jackass and seeing him on Idol only cements that fact. His ego is out of this world. I appreciate CI's judges a lot more now.

Seriously, I believe that the Australian Idol judging panel is the most snobbish Idol panel on Earth. I believe that they are more inherently biased towards the "singer-songwriter" type than even the Canadian Idol panel. Granted, I saw SOME talent (Brianna Carpenter and Jordan Paris) in the episode, but the rest was a whole pile of meh. At least on Canadian Idol, the "singer-songwriter" theme has been diluted so far. I fear on Australian Idol, it will only get thicker and we'll end up with a field of finalists who are talented but even less fun than previous rosters. And I'm sorry, but Bobby Flynn is NOT as big a star as the show made him out to be. Talented, yes. Unique? When people say you're one in a million, they really mean that there are at least 6,000 people on the planet just like you. But a star? I never got a star-quality performance from him, not even that acoustic rendition of "Superfreak".
