NUMBER
18:
Titanic
The film starts off in present time, with an old woman telling us her story. As she tells it, we are brought back to 1912, the year the Titanic sank. Leo plays Jack, a poor guy who wants to go to America. Kate Winslet plays Rose, a wealthy woman who is engaged to marry Cal (her family's actually having financial problems, so they want her to marry Cal to take care of those issues). Jack ends up winning his ticket on the Titanic minutes before it leaves, in a card game.
They meet when Rose attempts to jump off the front of the ship. Jack talks her down and saves her life. They bond and Jack brings her down for some fun in the lower levels of the ship. They dance, she has a great time, then call it a night. Cal, the overbearing jerk that he is, finds out about his future wives night, and shows how pissed off he is at breakfast. He flips the table, and then Rose leaves to meet Jack… she just couldn't handle it anymore.
They meet at the bow of the ship, and this is the famous scene/line of the movie. They
get up onto the rail and Jack screams out "I'M THE KING OF THE WORLD". Rose finally learns to let go and be herself, instead of the perfect
little wife. They end up going back to her room, and Jack sketches her naked, wearing only the "Heart of the Ocean", a necklace with a gorgeous (big)
gem on it. They then run around the ship, and find the room with all the cars. They get into one, and make love.
Following that, they go to the deck and while they're discussing their future after the Titanic, they see the giant iceberg collide with their ship. Cal finds the drawing of Rose nude, and frames Jack for stealing the Heart of the Oceans (he gets a friend to plant it in Jack's pocket). Jack gets arrested, is locked in a room and is left to die. Rose ends up finding Jack, and with an axe she breaks into the room. It was good timing too because Jack's room was filling with water since it was on one of the lower levels.
They run into Cal, he tries to get Rose to board a life boat, she ends up staying on board cause she didn't want to leave Jack, Cal chases them with a gun… He runs out of ammo and realizes that the Heart of the Ocean that he framed Jack with was put into Roses overcoat. He wasn't allowed onto the lifeboats (as originally planned), and he ends up screwed.
Jack and Rose come back to the top deck to realize that all of the boats have already left. As the Titanic sinks, they try to climb as high up as possible, trying to stay out of the water as long as possible. Once the boat is completely under the water, J&R find a piece of wood (door??) and cling onto it for dear life. Unfortunately, since Jack is in the water and Rose is on top of the wood, the ocean water is so cold that Jack ends up dying of hypothermia. SO SAD… I cried all three times I saw it in the theatre… lol.
Rose gets rescued and when the officer asks for her name, she responds with Jack's last name instead of her own. She sees Cal on the rescue boat, but doesn't let him see her… she wanted everyone to believe she had died on the titanic. Now back to the old woman who just finished telling her story. We find out that this woman is Rose. She walks to the edge of the boat that they are on (they were trying to send camera's down to take video of the wreckage), and pulls out the Heart of the Ocean. She ends up tossing the necklace into the water, and sending her heart down to Jack. At the very end of the movie, we see her in bed, surrounded in pictures of what she has done since the Titanic. These are things that she had spoken to Jack about doing after they would get off of the ship. We see a young Rose, meeting Jack at the main staircase of the Titanic, and everyone who died that night is surrounding them as they applaude. Rose died and is now living the best part of her life forever.
Fav. Quotes:
Jack: That's the one good thing about Paris: there's a lot of girls willing to take their clothes off.
Rose: Teach me to ride like a man.
Rose: I love you, Jack.
Rose: Fifteen-hundred people went into the sea, when Titanic sank from under us. There were twenty boats floating nearby... and only one came back. One. Six were saved from the water, myself included. Six... out of fifteen-hundred. Afterward, the seven-hundred people in the boats had nothing to do but wait... wait to die... wait to live... wait for an absolution... that would never come.

NUMBER 17: Definitely, Maybe
I LOOOOOVE RYAN REYNOLDS (and Isla Fisher)!!!! I just fell in love with this movie because it's like, when you were younger and you asked your dad (or mom) to tell you a story, and they make it up filled with magic and fantasy. I just loved how this was so real, and I found that real relationships go on the way Will Hayes (Ryan Reynolds) told his daughter (Maya). YES, she asked him to tell her the story about how he met her mother, but I just thought that his relationships with the 3 women were like real relationships.
Anywho, the 3 women I speak of are Emily Jones (played by Elizabeth Banks), Summer Hartley (played by Rachel Weisz), and April Hoffman (played by Isla Fishergoddess). One night, as Will is tucking Maya into bed, she asks him to tell her about how he and her mom met. She asks because they're going through a divorce, and she wants to know why they decided to get married in the first place. He doesn't want to at first, but eventually gives in.
Will starts off by saying that he wants Maya to try to figure out which lady in the story about his love life he's about to tell is actually her mom, so he changes their names. As he tells the story, we get the actual flashbacks of them happening (I mean how good would a movie be if we just saw Ryan Reynolds telling a story for two hours?!?! ACTUALLY… nevermind).
We find out that Emily is Will's college sweetheart, Summer is a friend of Emily (and they actually had a little bit of a relationship going between the two girls), and April works on the Clinton campaign in NYC with Will, she's the copy girl.
Will runs in to April outside of work, and they become quite close friends. He confides in her that he is planning on proposing to Emily, and she suggests that he practice on her since he's a little nervous (see the practice proposal in Fav. Quotes). They go back to her place, an he finds out that before her father died, he gave her a copy of Jane Eyre with a little note to her in the cover. She lost the book and has been looking for it ever since. She has a collection of that one book since she can't walk by a bookstore without checking it out. After they discuss her dream of traveling around the world (but couldn't because of her boyfriend… who she doesn't see very often), he tells her to break up with him, they kiss each other, then he leaves…
When Emily visits him, he proposes, she turns him down and tells him that she cheated on him with his old roommate, Charlie. Clearly heartbroken, he continues on with work and after Clinton becomes president, Will and a buddy (Russell) start their own consulting firm (helping politicians).
As April travels the world, she keeps in touch with Will through letters. Will starts dating Summer, then April finally returns home after she ends up realizing that she loves Will. When she gets together with him, he's buying an engagement ring for Summer. April is heartbroken, but at the time Will doesn't notice it. However, Will and Summer don't actually get to the point where he wants to propose because she writes a damaging story about the Politician that Will is promoting. They break up, and he quits his job. He ends up drinking a lot after finding out that April has started to date a new guy. One night, while drunk, he confesses to April that he has feelings for her. They get into a fight and part ways. One day, Will finds the copy of Jane Eyre that April was talking to him about, he buys it and decides to go give it to her. When he gets to her place, he finds that her new boyfriend is now living with her so changes his mind and leaves.
He runs into Summer, goes with her to a party and runs into Emily there. She now lives in NY, and her and Will start to date again. Maya is relieved because she didn't want Summer to end up being her mom, and have her dad not really be her dad. We find out that Emily is actually her mom, and that ends Wills story. He tells Maya that she was the happy ending of his story.
While unpacking his things (after moving), Will runs into the copy of Jane Eyre that he wanted to give April. He brings it to her work, and finds out that she's now single again. Instead of showing him gratitude for finding her book, she's so upset that he didn't give it to her sooner since he had it for so long. The next time that Maya is over at her dad's place, she notices that her dad is clearly still in love with April. She tells him that he changed the names of Emily (who is really Sarah), and Summer (who is Nathasha), he didn't change Aprils. They decide to win April's heart back, and swing by her apartment. They call her from the door downstairs, he says he wants to speak with her but she refuses to come down. She overhears Maya telling her dad that he needs to repeat the story to April, just as he said it to her. April waits, but when Maya and Will turn to walk away, she comes running down the stairs and out the door.
Will tells April that the only reason that he didn't give her the book was because it was the only thing that he had left of her. April forgives him, and they kiss. YAY, what a great ending.
Fav. Quotes:
Maya Hayes: What's a threesome?
Maya Hayes: Dad, I can't believe you smoked... and drank... and was such a slut... But I still love you.
(April is pretending she's Emily so that Will can practice propose to her)
Summer Hartley: You know what I've never done? I've never spent the whole day in
bed with a really great guy.
