Simon initially hated Clay because of his looks (he looked like a geeky or nerdy choir boy). Other people used the word "troll", muppet, etc.
Clay improved his looks. Simon praised Clay's singing. Near the end of the competition, Simon said in an interview that Clay would make the most money of all the Idols. I think that Simon said Clay would win AI2 in interview. When Ruben was announced the winner, Simon was not smiling- he looked surprised, shocked or disappointed. They changed the rules for Clay and Clay was treated like the winner. The original rule was that the second-place finisher had to wait several months for the winner to release his album first before releasing his album. Clay was allowed to release his album before Ruben. |

Clay was like "I'm the next American Idol" when he did his Idol audition. Well he should have came better prepared (better look). If Clay saw a fashion stylist before his audition, then he would have won the season?

Simon did not like Clay as much as Ruben because:
- Simon is pretty homophobic - Simon did not see Clay's commercial appeal - They were looking for a Luther Vandross Clay said "I'm the American Idol" because Nigel told him to. Simon was DELIGHTED that Ruben won, and very disappointed when Clay did better commercially. He still doesn't have a kind thing to say about Clay. I think there may have been a personal clash there, too. Clay is one of the most polarizing contestants AI has ever had. |

He didn't hate Clay at all. He thought Clay was a great singer. Watch Rewind. Read Simon's book. Then apologize for asking such a stupid question. At
the finale Simon and the show treated Clay as a co-winner instead of a second place finisher and helped him outsell Reuben. Clay fans are so fucking paranoid.

In watching rewind I have to agree with 8track...Simon didn't seem to hate Clay at all. He even went so far as to say that his performance of TO LOVE
SOMEBODY was the best he'd heard in ANY Idol related series, including Pop Idol, Season 1 and Season 2 of AI up to that point.
It is interesting to actually see the comments for myself after hearing about them for almost 5 years.... Simon was much much harder on others in Season 2 and clearly working overtime to keep them from advancing, Clay wasn't one of them. edited to correct the songs name...but the comment was still made and I'm pretty sure that everyone knew what song I was talking about grumpy
