In a game like Survivor which does not require a lot of intelligence, John is too smart for his own good. His overthinking makes him a poor strategist. John thought that by eliminating Monica it left Laura in a helpless position, considering she was the original target. With Monica gone it would leave the four Galu men plus Shambo in 5 on 4 vs foa foa plus Kelly/Laura as swing votes. The plan was for Monica to receive the majority of her votes from foa foa so Laura would be forced to stay loyal to Galu. Think about the weak position Laura and Kelly are in if Monica goes. Either they stick with Galu (who will claim they wanted to break up Monica/Laura but will now be loyal to Laura) or go with the 4 foa foa as a voting block of 6 but then be voted out 5th and 6th respectively. Plus every foa foa would have voted for Monica so how could she trust them, whereas Shambo and Erik were going to vote with Laura and act surprised. As a show of good faith John could tell Laura that Shambo is out next (get rid of her biggest rival to appease her) and then they can pagong foa foa with 6 to 4. John's biggest mistake was in assuming foa foa would not tell Laura and Monica about the plan because they would just be so thrilled not to be leaving. Foa foa knew this was the time to create major dissension within Galu and their plan almost worked. Fortunately for John no one knows it was orginally his idea to oust monica and Galu seemed very together in their decision to vote off Erik (except for clueless Shambo)

What John probably doesn't even realize is that Erik going is the best thing that could have happened to him. Now Galu can still pagong foa foa and at final 7 they have three men plus Shambo vs the three galu women., and they never have to worry about blindsiding Erik late in the game when he'd be more likely to use his idol. Of course someone will turn and Galu will implode sooner rather than later. I hope it's the women who turn because if John still doesn't think pagonging foa foa at this point is a good idea for his game then he really is just an idiot. A bookworm with no common sense or social skills.
