I did, about 10 years ago. The place was cosmetically a wreck but structurally sound. I got it for 30% under market value at the time. They are a great deal if
1) they are structurally sound, 2) it's in a decent neighborhood, and 3) you have enough money to renovate.
ETA: Not sure if I fall into the fruitcake category. And I just wanted to use the edit button. |

Apparently so. Are you saying I shouldn't have commas after a numbered statement?

Our first house was a bankruptcy house. We got it for a steal, put a new kitchen in as well as a bunch of sweat equity and sold it for a $100k profit.
They are great if you can fix them up as they have usually been pretty neglected. The down side was that his creditors had to approve our offer, which took about there months. |

Sounds cool....
I would have thought creditors would have been quick to approve.....interesting to know it took a long time. |

I've found a lot of foreclosures have unpermitted rooms and remodels. Those can be a nightmare so be wary.

My husband bought one a couple of months ago. It was a HUD foreclosure. He's doing some work on it and is going to flip it. It's assessed (taxwise) at
almost double what he bought it for. And that's before all the work and updating he's put into it.

I don't know if it was foreclosed on but the house I grew up in the previous owner had a bad divorce and lost the house. My mother said he used to park out
on the street and just stare at the house a few months after we moved in.

You all should feel terrible about profiting off of someone else's misfortune. Terrible, I say.

i would be wary. if they couldn't pay the mortgage, the house may have been neglected, maintenence-wise, a long time. get yourself a good home inspector.

I recently purchased my home this year and it was a foreclosure as well. Downside:
