I found these bad gifts on another site. For some reason these stories crack me up:

- Toilet Paper: Actually, I used this one. I was disappointed they did not spring for the eight pack, but hey a four pack works just as well. Still, something odd about literally flushing a gift down the toilet, much less wiping your..never mind.

- Bag of Pretzels: I received a bag of pretzels from my (then) soon-to-be-sister-in-law. They were jalapenos flavored so that took some of the sting off it. She actually wrapped the bag and put a bow on it. To this day I don't know if she was trying to be funny.

- Blank VHS Tape: From my boss. It was a high grade though. I worked for this man like a dog too. I think he got it for me because I once said I rented a movie. I'm sure it came from his own stash.

- Tamps: My grandmother bought me tampons, and I was EIGHT!!!

- Cook Book: I am a vegetarian and have been for over 10 years. Everyone in my family knows this. Last Christmas we got together and my Aunt tells me she is "SO excited to give me my present". I open it up and there it is 365 ways to cook Chicken. According to her Chicken is not meat!

- Wooden Watermelon: I worked for a woman who owned a court-reporting agency. One Christmas, she gave me a piece of wood about 10 inches long in the shape of a piece of watermelon.

But yeah, the Welcome Back Kotter thing sounds funny.

I was about 11 or so when I got it. Even back then, I could picture my parents in the store, stumped on what the hell to buy me. I'm sure one of them said "Well, she always watches "Welcome Back Kotter" with that Horse and Vinnie guy on it." "Oh, here's a pop-up plastic classroom with a record to it.....PERFECT!"

I also remember getting plastic cowboy boots when I was 13....... OMG were they hideous. I remember acting like I really liked them. What I really wanted was those cool 80's suede boots to tuck my Jordashe Jeans into. All they heard was "boots", I guess.

I wore them out of the house the next day, took my sneakers out of my purse down the street and ditched them down the sewer grate.

I also got an "educational toy" when I was 9 or so. It was a "Man" made out of clear plastic, so you could see all his veins, brain and major organs. You opened his stomach up and plastic intestines, a heart and his liver tumbled out. I guess the thinking was that if I could manage to put him back together, I would want to be a doctor. But since I was 9 years old, it took about 4 hours for his appendix and gallbladder to be lost forever. Which ends up happening to most people anyway.
