I was just thinking about when the "monster" tried to take Locke into that large hole. Could be "monster" be something that the others use to collect the "good people", and since Locke was released from it's grasp they sent Henry to get him?

Interesting article at Entertainment Weekly, where the 5 top theories are examined and the producers weigh in on their validity.

It seems now that a big part of it was originally just a pschological experiment but whether it still is or something went horribly wrong seems to be the situation now.

What do you think of this theory?
This one works on the basis of the psychological experiment theory, but takes it in a new direction. The idea being that the person behind the psychological experiment is searching for a specific individual, however, they do not know who this person is. Their reason for searching for this person could be one of many, but I think that if the person experienced a prophecy or revelation, the story would make the most sense. So, someone has a prophecy about some sort of major thing happening that is caused by someone with certain qualities, and is trying to figure out who that person is. This theory would assume that the prophecy occured well before the show started. Whoever the prophet is, managed to figure out narrow down the potential people were that could fufill it ,and through a variety of methods, was able to direct these person on to the flight 815. I think this theory can explain a variety of factors about the show: Charactar connections: Maybe the prophecy related to a specific connection that all the Losties shared. Maybe all of them were in a certain place at a certain time, and that is all that the phrophet had to go on. Reasons for being on the plane: All of the Losties seamed to be forced on the plane, as though it were their destiny (which we know is a theme on the show). However, maybe it wasn't destiny, but it was instead that these people were manipulated or forced to go onto the plane. (Kate and the Marshall, Jack and his father etc.) The Numbers: Maybe part of the prophecy. All the random unsolved mysteries (Skeletons, Dharma Project, the others, black and white rock): These are all intricate cogs of the experiment. They are all there for different reasons, designed to give the prophet information about who the person that they are searching for is, although we currently aren't aware of what information they could provide. (E.G. Maybe the others are there to aid in the experiment on a face to face level). |

I've concluded I don't think they all could have been. When most people travel...they have specific itinararies. But so many of the Losties didn't. (even though it was fate that Sun decided to stay with Jin) * Claire* was specifically placed on this specific flight by the psychic. But the majority of the people on that flight, seemed only there by fate: Kate: she had no idea she would be turned in and returned on that flight Jack: he had no idea how long it would take to find his father. Locke: he'd thought he would be on his walkabout...not that plane going home. Sayid: he was to go back to the US the day before. He stayed the extra day to see to his old friends proper burial. AnaLucia: she had no idea IF she was even going to return...since she was running away from her crime. Boone and Shannon: Boone had no way of knowing when he'd be able to talk his stepsister into returning with him. EKo: he planned an earlier flight but was delayed because of his investigation of the miracle. People who may or may not have known when their return flight was going to be: Charlie: he went to talk his brother into starting the band again, but failed. He could have booked a round ticket or not. Sawyer: He knew where is was going, and possibly knew he needed to get the job done by a certain time. But Libby...we have no idea why she was there...so we have no idea if she was known to be on that flight. So IF the crash or a simulated crash was orchestrated...who were they specifically after? I would think it would have to be one of the people that was on that flight...not just by fate. Crashing a plane to try and get someone in particular seems reckless and you could kill the person you are after. So if they were after someone in particular then I'd have to think the crash was simulated to make them only think they'd crashed. So...I conclude that if Dharma or the Others or any group were behind an actual crash...it wasn't for any of these people in particular...just a crapshoot for who they end up with. and If the crash was indeed an accident....was it something on the island that drew the plane to it? It must have been the natural magnetism of the island...and it must have been because something happened to cause loss of control of that magnetism. He took over the building of Eko's church. He provided vaccine for the baby, and now he's gotten back into Claire's good graces.

I think the plane was being brought to the island on purpose...but that the magnetism somehow got out of control ( not pushing the button?)...and the plane crashed, which was not really the plan. I'm also thinking the pilot or the co-pilot was in on it. So I'm even extending my speculation to say...it's possible that smokey the monster did not really kill the pilot, as we've been led to believe. oh we shall see this wednesday. At least I don't have to wait that long to see how wrong I can be...LOL. :)Peggy |

What if the Hanso Foundation had some big science experiment to make Antarctica habitable, hence the magnetic field from the South Pole and the polar bears?
Some rich idiots had the idea and had their friends/families buy into it. Certain people volunteer to be the guinea pigs for the project. The Losties are descendants or relatives of said guinea pigs/rich idiots. Because the Dharma project messes up the ecological balance or something, disease breaks out making some of the people go crazy, creating monsters, etc. The Foundation now needs kids like Claire's babeh and Walt for stem cells to find a cure for the diseases and fix the problems they've made. Or, it was some big "fountain of youth" experiment gone awry. Can't believe we have months of nothing but a BIG FUCKING MAGNET. |

Well, the finale has reinforced thoughts about The Philadelphia Experiment. I'm thinking the Hanso Organization, Paik and Widmore may have been involved in a series of "Philadelphia Experiments" over a series of years, with our losties being only the most recent. Rousseau's crew being one, the Others being another, and our losties being the most recent. Heck there could be more on that island.
The original Philadelphia Experiment took place in the forties, right....the radio station that Hurley tapped into briefly was 40's music, Leonard was in the Navy in the forties. How did the Others get there. Boat, Plane, hot air balloon. Maybe Hanso et al tried with different means of transportation and our Losties were the ultimate test a huge jet liner! The "incident" was a complete failure that had to be covered up, but the rest were moderately successful. Many of the sailors on the ship went crazy after the experiment. Aren't our Losties starting to act a little strange? Leonard went nuts, so did Libby? The connection between the Losties? Could they all be children or other close connection of members of Hanso, Paik, etc... Were they vaccinated as children or later and promised to Dharma....Was Dharma trying to avoid problems by testing vaccines to avoid the craziness that might ensue? Were some of the parents guilt ridden after they became attached to their charges (ie Jacks father) and couldn't live with the consequences? Is Walt of particular interest because of his psychic abilities, Aaron because he would be born on the island? Just a thought. |

After having seen the finale once...I'm going with the "theory" that we were actually shown real answers...not red herrings.
Therefore...My theory is that the Business Tycoon Charles Widmore has constructed a self-contained world in order to keep Desmond away from his daughter. Desmond was in the slammer for a couple of years, giving time for Widmore to use his millions to recruit, pay and train people for their "roles" in the charade. I believe that the Hanso Foundation was real but with "the accident," they ran out of funding. All that equipment/hatches etc. was there and simply abandoned. The plane crashing was an unfortunate and unexpected event and all the show is about is how Widmore is able to continue the charade of keeping Desmond away from his daughter. This theory works because: --The Others aren't really evil or doing anything. They're conduits between "the real world" and the "island." --Desmond's fiance has been searching for him all this time. The Arctic dudes were financed by her to find Desmond. --The island can be a magical place, but with Hanso Financing "drying up," there's no way to continue the experiments about how electromagnetism affects human body functioning. --If the Hanso Foundation doesn't exist--my theory is even better becasue that would mean Widmore has constructed a world that feels like an 1980s pyschological/socialism grande experiment complete with authentic references from the 1980s (records, electronic equipment, workout equipment etc.) ALL IN THE NAME TO FOOL DESMOND AND KEEP HIM AWAY FROM HIS DAUGHTER! For further proof...my idea is not exactly original. There was a 1997 Michael Douglass movie called "The Game" where the basic premise---wealthy people using money to fool a family member....rent it.
