as far as all these famous names go, i wonder if they're supposed to be real historical figures in the show. in other words, does lost live in a world where philosophers with these names never existed, hence the characters names are just happenstance to anyone in the story and no one could make any connections in the story.
OR, does lost live in a world where these philosophers did exist? if so, that poses some interesting questions. that would mean the characters names are either extraordinary coincidence, or there's a reason behind it.
there could be many reasons, but one obvious one would be that the people who named them all, their parents, named them these things on purpose. and, perhaps, the parents names were fake, making these characters last names fit with the theory.
suppose for instance the theory about all their parents/guardians being dharma-ites is true. perhaps when one joined dharma, or at least the program they were in, they had to change their name, and suppose collectively emphasis was given on choosing (or being assigned) famous philosophical names.
this could account for the preponderence of these names, but the question would still be raised about any of the losties realizing this connection between many of them.
and, what would be the nature of all this that a seemingly scientific type of program would be so enamored with famous philosophical figures?
