I'm still trying to finish the sample chapters of the first book that I downloaded on my e-reader. It seems good, but not great....does it get better though? Should I keep at it? I don't read fantasy books very often but I'm always up for any genre as long as it's good, and I thought it could be fun to read the books and watch the show. Actually, I liked the first chapter a lot, with -spoiler warning- the three in the woods and you think the one boy will be the main character and he dies at the end of the chapter. But after that it's dragged a little.

For me, it was just confusing with the literally hundreds of different characters. Its almost worth jotting them down on a notecard so you know who is who and what their relation to everyone else is. Once you get through a POV chapter per person though, it should pick up a bit.

Posts: 6230 11/18/10 05:14 PM Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Yeah, a couple of my friends that I introduced to the series told me they thought it was a bit slow in the beginning as well, but they all got addicted eventually ^^ I wouldn't say they're fantasy geeks either, so I definitely don't think you have to be one to enjoy it. The first part of the book is a lot about setting up plots, introducing characters etc -- I agree with Joaqenix that it should pick up a bit after some chapters. IDK, the series might not be for everyone, but I'd recommend trying to get through chapter 9 at least... I know that's where a lot of people get hooked.

Yeah, I don't know which chapter it is there that should DEFINITELY get you hooked, but its pretty early on...and you'll uh definitely know what it is when it happens.

Which I've suspected for a long time, actually. Seven always seemed unrealistic the way this series has expanded in scope.

Posts: 6098 11/22/10 11:53 AM Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Lena Headey isn't who I'd first think of for Cersei, but shes been pretty great in lots of other stuff, so I have faith. The one casting decision I just cannot get behind in any way is Catelyn. I know lots of readers aren't a huge fan, but shes one of my favorite characters in the books, and the actress they picked for her is just way off what I expected. She played Hermione's mom for 30 seconds in the new Harry Potter movie and just looks...old. And hard. The Catelyn in my mind would look softer and more motherly. Idk, I'll give her a chance when the show starts, but I'm very meh on her so far. Especially since Jennifer Ehle (the original Catelyn) fits the character way better.
